quick question, do you have to remove the rear main seal "retainer" to change the seal? You know since the retainer is part of the upper oil pan seal...

I meant to change the seal when I had both oil pans off but I forgot and the oil pans are on now...

thanks

it's a pain in the ***, trust me. I wasn't even able to get it off the last time I did an SR swap.

The easiest way would be to pry it out with it still in it's retainer, but even that isn't easy. personally, if i was doing it again, i would just drill a hole through the seal, and then use a screwdriver to pry it out. Even though it looks like it's just brown plastic, there is metal underneath it.

great idea, get all those shavings in your oil pan and all over your bearings when you drill it out......

hurddawg,

Go get a gasket puller tool from autozone or something. This tool looks like a hammer with curvy pointed on each side. Just slide one of the curvy point into the rear main seal, underneath the metal part of the gasket (the one Bud talked about). Then just pry it out. Do not remove the retainer! If you do then you have to drop the aluminum pan again. Trust me, I learned the hard way.

One hole just big enough for a screw driver and a shavings magnet will take care of that.
