rear main engine seal

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie on this forum and looking for some help to replace my rear main engine seal on my 97 pathy. The mechanic wants $1200 to do the job. Got 225K miles and I don't know if I should spend this much and than have something else fail. Any help on how to replace the seal is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Unless you have a full shop to do this and ahve the know-how, don't. It's a lot of work. Frankly, you could probably get a used engine for 700-1200 with much lower miles and get it dropped in for under $1000. It's technically the same amount of work to pull and replace an engine as it is to replace the main seal.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm probably just off a little on the $$.
