Rear hitch, ball in or out?

Those of you who have a rear hitch, do you leave the ball attached or remove it and place a cover over the receiver hole?

I leave my ball attached thinking that if someone bumps me in the rear it may protect my bumper cover. What do you think?

Leave mine out as I use it infrequently. Besides, it's the perfect height for getting bruises on your shins.
