Rear headrests in my '15 Rogue won't stay locked securely

Hi, everyone! I am now a proud owner of a beautiful 2015 Rogue SL. In the week that I have had the vehicle I have been attempting to puppy-proof the cargo area. I purchased the Petego K9 Guard Universal Pet Safety Barrier, which attaches to the headrest posts, as well as a Weathertech cargo protector.

The pet barrier can be seen below:

However, after installing the pet barrier, my crafty little meagle has managed to stick her head under the lowest horizontal rod of the barrier and then lift her head up, which expands the gap enough to climb over the back seat. This is all due to the fact that my rear headrests are not "locking" into the notched positions when raised. After looking at the headrests, it actually appears as though the notches in the headrest posts may be on the wrong side (i.e., opposite of the release) of the post, which would make it impossible for it to latch at all. If that's not the reason, the latch/notch mechanism is simply too weak to prevent the headrest from moving.

Has anyone experienced this? I know the headrests are facing the correct way, but the latch is simply ineffective. Without being able to secure the barrier by preventing the headrests from raising and lowering, she's not going to be able to enjoy car rides for awhile. :nono:

I would run the car by a dealership, but I purchased the car 5 hours away and the nearest Nissan dealership is over 30 minutes from home. I'm hoping there is a simple explanation or fix, but I'm at a loss.

Thanks in advance!

Um, the notches aren't on the wrong side, the headrests are. Swap them and you'll solve your problem.

They are the exact same, I already checked that. When looking out the back when sitting in the rear seat, the little plastic release button is on the right side of both headrests. The notches are on the inside of the right rod for both headrests, which seems totally backwards. Every other car I've owned has had the notch be on the same side as the release button. I haven't changed anything with them since I got the car. Either they gave me two headrests that are both wrong or the latch system is just way too weak.

EDIT: I managed to find a picture of a Nissan Rogue headrest which shows what I am talking about. The notch is on the inside and the latch release is on the outside of the rod. I've always seen them be on the same side, but for some reason they aren't and certainly don't latch securely.
