I am new here and have a question. I have a brand new 2013 Rogue S that I am leasing. I had formerly been a loyal Toyota owner since my first car. I had gone to have my grandson's car seat installed and when the guy stepped in the back to do it, he quickly stepped out and said "what was that"? I asked what he was talking about, and he said the floor was very "spongy" and felt as though his foot was gonna go right through it! We lifted up the mat and pressed our hands down on the floor and it felt hollow underneath. When I went back to the dealership, I was told it was normal and that it's sealed completely around for sound control. I was about ready to start asking strangers who have the same vehicle if they have the same thing. Does anybody else have this and is it normal? Sure seems odd to me.

Welcome aboard. There are many good people here with lots of knowledge. I had my interior out and there is a very thick padding under the carpet to help dampen road noise. That is what you are feeling and it is normal. I got some pictures and If I can find it I will post it.

Thank you so very much! This makes me feel so much more secure. I've had this car just one month yesterday and although I always feel bad to part with my vehicles when I get a new one, I must admit, I do love this Rogue:)
Thank you again, much appreciated.

Here is the picture of the interior. The floor beams that where the front seats sit is the height of the foam under the floor. In the first picture they are the vertical beams or the tallest one.

Excellent, Dave! That really shows exactly what I'm describing. Thans so much!

sometimes the carpet will bend upward, creating a really large gap - which feels like a soft spot. if your car had a hole to expose the ground under the car - you'd hear it.

At the time I didn't think I needed it as the foam was 3" thick. Nissan really added a lot of foam there for road noise. Too bad that didn't continue into the trunk area and the rear seats. Maybe I will put down some second skin next time I vacuum the car LOL.

Bump.

Thanks for the images. I appreciate the banter, as I have taken things apart for S-n-G more than once.

Seriously though... why did you expose the floor? Did you happen to do so in order to apply sound damping material such as Dynamat or Raam's BXT II to the floor? If so, did that happen to help with road noise? I see in your photos that Nissan put a healthy coat of their stamped-on tar/fiber damping stuff under the front occupants' feet, but left barren the area under the front seats and and under rear occupant foot area. In the photos the rear 2/3's of the floor trays look like cookie sheets ready for a pot-banging-toddler-tantrum. So it seems plausible that application of damping material could significantly reduce low frequencies (the worst road noise right now is low frequency rumble) that would be able to pass thru that thick foam pad (which should kill most mid-to-high frequencies).

If you didn't apply damping material to the floor, do you know anyone who has? I will proceed and post my results either way, but applying Dynamat Extreme to the floor is going to be my weekend project. I intend to start with the "rear occupant calf plate", and the rim right above it, since it seems to ring pretty good and has just a little denim batting between the carpet and the metal. So far I have meticulously done the doors and most of the rear hatch, but have not yet achieved the desired reduction in road noise, but I anticipate the Bose will sound amazing from the work to-date once all is reassembled.

The roads here (northern WA state) are much louder (due to studded tires used by others, and general composition) than I am used to, resulting in sound levels in excess of 80 dB for the Rogue on the highway.

Thanks!

Hi eaglecat769,

I followed your post in rear-panel-removal-for-sound-proofing-t581485.html to this post. I'm in the same situation: just bought a 2019 Rogue, and feel the cabin noise is really loud. Especially, the second row, which confirms your observation above that there is no sound insulation material on the floor of second row and trunk. I wonder if you can share your result of soundproof Rogue? In your other post, you mentioned: " applied Dynamat to the wells from the inside and the quarter panels above them (to the extent of my ability to reach back there, and I contort pretty well, so it is good). HOWEVER, I have not yet achieved desired results. " - did you mean your soundproof work didn't reduce cabin noise? I'm hesiate to jump in this weekend project given the amount of work. Thanks for your advice!
