What’s up folks? I’m new to the board.

I have a 06 M45 with DVD player and rear auxiliary input. I want my kids to be able to watch movies while in the back.

I’ve considered an overhead unit or two headrest units. Most of what I’ve found online are individual self contained units and all I need is a monitor that will tap into the existing system. I don’t really want to go to the dealer because I assume stealership pricing is unfavorable.

Has anybody out there added a monitor to their existing system or have any advice on a cost effective way to achieve my objective?

BTW, if you tap into the system will the rear monitor require the emergency brake to be activated as with the front monitor?

Thanks.

I don't own a New M myself but I can tell you that after market systems are sometimes more customizable than OEM. Also with after market systems you can bypass that security feature that requires the E-brake to be activated before the video system will work.

Welcome to NICO and Happy Holidays.

The rear monitor works fine in the OEM models without the brake engaged. It's just the front monitor on the dash that gets disabled for video.

Search the forums here there was a guy that did the dual headrest monitors and he managed to hook it to the existing DVD player, however there was allot of work involved and expenses.

Welcome
I'm the person that did this. It was actually not that expensive. The factory matched dual headrests were $750. The installation was about $250 to tap into the existing DVD player. This was still cheaper than buying two headrests with built-in DVDs which run about $1,600 (unless you get a non-factory matched set.) So all in all about $1,000. I went a little further with my install with iPhone integration, etc. which is not necessary.

wow that's a great deal for what you did. How is the quality of the video on the two rear headrests?

Quality of the two screens is pretty good. They are made by SAVV who's LCDs are rated pretty well. The screen I'd say is comparable to the picture coming from the front Nav LCD if not a bit better.

I still think the best enterainment device for a car is to install a overhead car dvd. I planned for many days and I finally bought this 7 inch one http://www.justcardvd.com/products/7-in ... b-GPS.html? I installed it by myself. My kids just love it

I asked my volvo dealer about this entertainment device for my volvo but he didn't seem that interested to be honest. He said it is going to better for me to install an overhead dvd player, I admire his honesty.

This is a cool unit, can you tell me what it took for you to install it, do you have any pictures? I assume it went in to the same location as the current oem screen?
