I need to know approx. how much hosrepower a stock 240sx rearend can handle. Its out of a 1990 with approx 86K on it. I want to transplant it into my s-10 (400hp v-8) Thought the independent suspension would be nice for the air bags. Any thoughts?Transplant the 240 rearend into the s-10

If you can get it to work with an S-10, and a V-8, then it will handle the power no problem. In japan, they have been making 600-700 hp on the rear end with no problem.

i vote, go ahead and do it, but its not bAllZ OuTZ Y0, their are plenty of ppl pushing way more than 400 hp through the stock r200 diferentials, oh btw, get at least a vlsd, cuz an open dif with 400 hp is retarded, you will burn up your passenger side tire about 10 times faster than the drivers side if you dont

Diffs and transmissions are rated for torque, not HP. None the less, there are quite a few R200 diffs handling upwards of 350-400 ft-lbs of TQ to the wheels, which I guess is 450+ ft-lbs at the crank.

So you should be fine as long as you're not launching with slicks all the time at the drag strip.

excellant news guys...I was hoping to hear that it was able to be done. I think the 240 rear will work much better than the solid straight axle of my s-10. Sorry I have no ft/lb figures because the motor isn't done.

I can't imagine any V8 that easily fits into an S10 making more than 450-470 ft-lbs of TQ to the crank normally aspirated. Slap on a blower and all bets are off, but I can't see an N/A V8 really overwhelming this diff with normal acceleration.

He mentioned he wants IRS as opposed to solid-axle. That'll limit him to the diff/suspension setup from a vette, or a mustang unit. Most domestic rear-ends are solid-axle :-x

You could get a Viscous LSD from other cars(J30, 240SX w/ LSD etc.), but I doubt it'd hold up to alot of power. I really don't like the way they work either, but that's personal preference. Costs about $200-300 for the whole pumpkin and output shafts, but good luck on finding a used one that still works really well. Most are tired and the viscous fluid is on its way out, so heavy use will toast it or severely limit its performance.

If you're going to be dragging/straightline racing mainly, then I'd go with probably a Nismo clutch-pack LSD. Runs about $800 and you install it into your non-LSD pumpkin.

Wow sounds expensive but probably worth the money considering the use..thanks for the info. I wish I had kept that part of the frame to easy fabricate mounts for the rear.
