Hey guys,

I know that Nissan's disk brakes screech when they are getting low...as a warning...how about the drum brakes?

Thanks!

They do, but you have to make the sound yourself as you drive I think.I open all the windows and screech as I go down the road.

Actually I have no idea. . so uh *bump*

Theoretically the rear shoes should last as long as the vehicle, how many miles are on your R50?

There are no audible warnings on rear drum brakes.

You should be checking them once a year minimum when you rotate your tires. That is if you rotate your tires.

Rear brakes on nissan trucks are notorious for not being in proper adjustment. The star adjusters just don't work all that well and I may get flamed by NisTech for my statement by every Nissan truck i've owned has had the same issue. Twice a year I check my brakes and adjust the tension so they make proper contact. Pathfinder shoes are bonded (glued) to the shoe. Rivetted are better but have a slightly shorter service life because the rivets sometimes make contact with the drum and kill a drum in no time at all.

everytime i change my front brakes, i see if i need to adjust the rear drums. that always gives you an idea of when you need to change the rear drums, but i personaly want to make a rear disk conversion.

My 2 cents worth. I had my brakes checked as part of my wheel rotation and rebalance, and my rear brakes were still at 70%. My 02 Pathfinder has 165K Kms on it (just over 100,000 miles). I'm guessing I'll never have to replace the shoes, unless I keep this thing for a very long time. As far as the front brakes go, I replaced them last fall (pads only). So far so good. And NO, the rear drum brakes to not have an early warning system. If you start hearing grinding noises, chances are it's already too late.

I came very close to doing this. I was going to get Willwood 4 piston calipers for the rears but they wanted $1600 for it. Plus they didn't say how the parking brake was incorporated, which is slightly important with me and my 5spd.

Yeah also when you check the rear shoes check the drums for wear, the shoes can put a groove in the drum, usually when that happens its pretty difficult to remove the drum because its caught on the shoes. One of my adjusters is shot, i just havent found the time to replace it and fix all the stuff back there.
