I have a stupid question. I've had my S13 for a little over a year now, and have put probably close to 10,000 miles on it in that time. I was recently told by one of the dudes at Jiffy Lube (I'm too lazy too change my own oil) that I should drain my rear differential. I was like sure, yeah, okay, thanks, I'll do that.

I didn't even know it had a rear differential. =/ So now my question is how often does this need to be done, should I take it to a garage for that, or is it easy? I don't know **** about cars, sadly. ;D

And also, is there other stuff like this that I should be doing periodically, or checking? I realize that just because the car passes inspection doesn't mean that it's in perfect condition, and I would like to take good care of it.

Thanks for any help. =)

well seeing as you say you know nothing about cars i'd get things like this done at a shop. i guess for peace of mind changing the rear end fluid is a good idea, if i were you i'd also get the transmission fluid changed. just take you car up to pretty much any REAL garage (not jiffy lube) and tell them that you want the fluid changed in the transmission and rear end. any transmission shop could do this too.

hey hey take it easy on jiffy lube!! i work there lol. But yeh i cant speak for all jiffy lubes but most do a fine jop in changing gear box fluids. So if they seemed reliable take it back and have them drain and fill your trans and differental. At mine they are 27.99 each so just something to think about.

Holisticbeatz - That's a really interesting thread... I'll keep that in mind if my differential ever dies. However, right now all I need is to drain and fill it. What I'm wondering is how hard it is to get to the drain and wherever I fill it from. Like, will I need to jack it way up (I don't have jacks)?

I WOULD like to learn everything about my car, it's just that I don't have a lot of time to experiment, and it's my driving car so I can't have it out of commission for class and stuff. =)

So maybe I'll just take it in and ask if I can watch him change it, so I know how...
