OK, I picked up this rear diff for my 93 240. Not certain if it's from a J30 or a JDM 180 (didn't notice the 's13' chalk until I took the pics ).

Has either a 4.08 or a 3.9 ratio (from my calculations).

I need to know if I can bolt this in directly, or if I need to take the VLSD out of the pumpkin and swap into my diff, or if I need to buy halfshafts and install the whole assembly.

Pardon the dirt, it'll be spotless before I start working with it.

Appears to be a JDM diff... there is no ABS sensor, and has S13 style mounting points on the front. 5-bolt axles were also standard on the 180's from what I've seen.

it's definetly not from a 95+J30... because the flanges would have 3x2 bolt pattern not 5...

so I'm safe to presume that this would bolt up directly..

also.. are there 4 bolts on the back of the cover? if so then you can bolt this sucker up..

corrtct me if I'm wrong... I'm not to certain about this...

Yep - 4 bolts.

That's a 4.08 ratio just like the stock open diff?

where'd you buy it from? Looks just like the spare 180sx vlsd + axles i got from Phase2 (for a good price, mind you).

I sold the spare diff + axles to a friend and it's a plug & play deal.

There was mention of a 4.36 ratio 180sx VLSD but i'm sure those are either spoken for or sell at a premium

Got it from a local...

According to the locals, I'll need axles.

Greg,

I've been told that the pre 1994 J30 Axles will work with that LSD, they share the same bolt pattern as your Diff, and I've heard more than once that they are a perfect fit for the 240.

I have not checked this fact myself, I've never had a J30 Axle in my hand, but its just something that I've heard.

Easy way to check if you need axles is just look at yours. There's the 3x2 config and then the 5x1 setup like that thar VLSD. You'll need 5 bolt ones if ya ain't got 'em already.

If you don't mind could you take off the rear cover and take a pic of the diff and ring gear? I have what looks like an lsd at my house, but is working like an open diff.

I haven't seen any pics of the stock v-lsd diff, but I've seen pics of the open diff and it looks nothing like mine.

The SR20DET 5MT S13's were 4.08'sThe CA18DET 5MT S13's were 4.36'sThe CA18DET AT S13's were 4.36's The SR20DET AT S13's were 3.91's

Odds are it's a 4.08 out of an early S13 K's or 180SX.

I don't think the 4.36 comes in LSD though.

here is 180sx axle next to a new ($) '93 J30 axle. bolt pattern and splines are a match. the '95 N/A Z32 rear hub works with either. a more detailed picture is in my members rides album
