Rear Deck Rattle?

II had the same rattle in my '03 M45. I dug into it myself and after much diding I found that the shock mount that is mounted to the upper body was the problem.
The mount for the shock is mounted to the body with two studs and the nuts for the studs are under the rear package tray. I found one of the two nuts only fingers tight so I tightened it down, and no more rattle. It wasn’t a rattle after all, but it was the threads rubbing up and down in the hole of the body metal that made the noise...

I had noise coming from around the rear deck on my M35S that was hard to pinpoint. It occurred at moderate speeds around town on rougher roads. It sounded a bit like a rattle but I could never localize it. The dealer said my rear struts are a bit noisy and are replacing both rear struts under warranty. It's odd that both would do this, but I'm hoping this fixes it.

on the 02Q45-----
ended up being the shock where it comes into the top tray. the was a shot bushing that caused the top of the shock to rattle against the deck.

Not only does that add some density it should actually help dissipate the vibrations in the fairly thin rear deck.
I'm also developing a subwoofer-related rattle. Where do you shove the stuffed animal guts into? What's the "canopy"?

Is that the void between the upper semi-rigid trunk liner (where the light bulb is snapped into) and the rear metal deck the sub is actually attached to?

Quick update - The dealer replaced both my rear struts under warranty and the noises are completely resolved! Couldn't be happier.

EDIT: Scratch that. I should've waited a few days to confirm. It's still there, bad as ever. It's very noticeable on cooler days and gone on warm days. They replaced my strut mounts on both sides last week. Still no dice. Really hoping the 3rd visit is a charm or I may just sell this thing.

Well, great news: Third time is a charm! Here's a summary:
1. Replaced both rear struts.
2. Replaced both rear strut mounts
3. Lubed the point between the struts and the mount or the mount and the body (sorry, can't recall which, but pretty sure it's the former). This actually fixed it. Back end is silent now!

Thankfully, all 3 services were covered under warranty and I got to enjoy a fun G37x loaner.

Those G's are freakishly quick, but the VQ sounds very rough in the G, and buttery smooth in the M. One of the reasons I chose the M instead. The M's V6 is about as smooth as the old 3.0L V6 in the late 90's Maximas. That was a great engine. And the ride on 17's in the G, while good, is no better than my Sport on 19s and in some cases actually seems harsher since the car is just plain louder and transmits more road noise into the cabin. That said, if the all new 2012 G improves NVH and increases interior material quality, I'll be very interested.

Can you provide a little more detail on exactly how you were able to eleminate the rear deck rattle. What cover did you pull down? Did you fill the area between the metal deck and the upper plastic deck that the speaker covers are mounted to?

Found the problem.
The center tail light on the back dash was loose. I just grabbed it and pulled it toward the front of the car to tighten it up. Rattle GONE! Hope this helps.

I also have these strange noises coming from random places in my 07 M35 Sport. I don't notice the rear one that often, but I has taken me a year and some months to find out that the navigation disc rattles while it's spinning around in the DVD player behind the glovebox. This was (is) driving me absolutely nuts

That is EXACTLY what I hear on my 45. I had the dealer replace the rear shocks but it is still there. It sounds high up like the rear deck is loose in mine. I was going to put my ipod back there to record the noise, but you beat me to it. You might want to give this to the dealer and have him hear it. Thanks for doing this! At least we have something quantifiable.

I think I found the rattle.. It's on the left side on the trunk where the factory amp is at and there's some other electronic stuff there with bolts Mine weir all loose I could've of even moved them with my hands and one of them was broken so I tighten them and now the rattle is gone. Did your car ever been rear ended? Or someone been messing with it back there?

Checked:
E-brake cable =it was tight
rear struts = they weir good
under the spare under the car tthat black box = it was tight
Removed rear seat & deck & seat belts & sub = it wasnt any of that everything was tight and
good
Everything under the car was tight

*tighten the bolts on the left side in the trunk near the factory amp and the amp bolts and so far the rattle is gone. :mike

Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out this weekend and see if anything is loose on that side. The car hasn't been rear ended, so it may just have loosened up over time or was never tight to begin with.

It is most likely the strut mounts and seems to be a known issue on the M.

I had a rattle/squeak in my '10 M35 whenever I went over a speed bump of other rough surface. Took it to the dealer last month and the service guy knew exactly what the issue was as soon as we drove out of the dealer lot to let him hear it. They replace the strut mounts on both sides and the noise was gone. It's been about a month and no problems at all with the rattle coming back.

The rear shock mounts are on the shock, remove the shock assembly and you can remove the shock mount.
