rear brakes!!!!!

ok so i just wanted to tell my little story to all and see if anyone can tell me why this was done. i found a 91 240 hatch for 500$ all that it needed was a fuel pump and it had an issue with the brakes. The brake fluid was emptying out after about an hour after filling the master cylinder up and had no e-brake what so ever. So i was under the impression it was the master cylinder but i took off the rear wheels to figure out why no e-brake........ And there was the problem no calipers nor rotors nothing everything was just sitting there dangling around.

So here is my question why would anyone take off the rear calipers and rotors there was nothing wrong with them (found it all in the back) everything was fine put it all on and not a problem since but i just dont understand why they were removed in the first place. any ideas??????

Maybe they were upgrading the brakes but failed to follow through.
