On my '90 240 SX hatchback, I have identified the source of a very loud rubbing noise as my left-rear brake. The noise only occurs when I am backing up and applying the brakes. I have had the rear rotor and brake pads replaced. They all look fine from what I can see, ie. adequate thickness to the pads and a nice surface on the rotor face. When I apply the emergency brake, which I rarely use, the noise occurs again but seems to go away for awhile. I'm stumped! I'd like to remove the caliper and pull the rotor off and have a look behind, but don't know how. I do not know how the emergency brake works on this model. Does it actuate the caliper, or is there another system? Any advice would be most welcome.

Sounds like the caliper is siezing from time to time. I would pull everything off and try to bleed the brake line. If the Piston is harder than normal to push back it may be a sign of a bad caliper.

remember to screw the rear piston in, and make sure the slide pins are greased up

assuming its similar to an s14, theres just 4 bolts to remove the caliper and rotor. the e-brake fitting can be a pain to take off if theres a lot of rust and corrosion. i had a similar problem and it ended up bein one of the floating pins seized up. itll be pretty obvious if thats your problem once you pull the caliper, good luck.

what if it makes the noise in reverse without touching the brake?

Shouldn't be any rust or corrosion, as I live in the Desert Southwest. The noise occurs only when I apply the brakes going in reverse.Okay, I remove 4 bolts to pull off the caliper and the rear disk rotor. What are the floating pins? What do I do then?Does anyone have any pics or exploded diagrams?
