Anyone rebuild their rear brake caliper before?

AFAIK the piston is a screw type due to the mechanical parking brake mechanism. The front ones are easy. But these I don't know.

My question is, do you need to disassemble the whole caliper (which is a pain) or can your basically replace the piston seal once you twisted it out of the caliper housing?

I replaced one of my seals, on my rear caliper, it was easy, just messy. I just replaced the piston seal and the dust boot, all really easy.

So what did you have to do to replace the seal, twist the piston out and that's it?

I've been doing brakes for 5 years, and I've NEVER rebuilt a ratcheting brake caliper. I simply hear that the labor is more expensive than a Remanufactured caliper...which isn't cheap either...However! I't's just brakes!, it can't possibly take that long to rebuild, ASSUMING you've done it before. Why do you need to rebuild it anyway? Those things never go bad....Unless they rust out, or they BROKE(seen it), which, u will need a new caliper anyway.

Here are the directions from the FSM, but i cant provide the pics.....

1. Remove piston by turning it counterclockwise with suitable longnose pliers

2. Pry off Ring "A" from piston with suitable pliers and remove adjusting nut

3. Dissasemble cylinder body- Pry off rings "B" and "C" with pliers, then remove spring cover, spring and seat

4. Remove piston seal (be careful not to damage cylinder body

5. Remove return spring and lever

If u still wanna go through with it, lemme know, ill type up the install process. I can't copy it, so this took a while,

Yep, piston twists right out so you can replace the seal. That should be all you need to do besides the boot.

FWIW, i didn't fiddle with taking apart the piston like the FSM and previous poster say to do. I figured changing the seals would be all it needed.
