2006 Altima 2.5 SL:
I just replaced my rear brakes (rotors, pads, calipers), and unfortunately, found that the backing plate(s) have pretty much disappeared due to rust.
I live in Canada in a snow/salt region, so rust is an issue here.
Question is, do I really need the plates, or am I OK to run without them?
(Hopefully this forum is not so quiet that no-one answers.)

You'll be fine without them.

Ya, that's what I thought.
They look like a PITA to replace, so I won't..thanks.

Don't get me wrong they do serve a purpose but they are a pain to get at. So they're pretty much gone? That's some serious rust.
