Rear axle lengths

This is probably a really stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. I had the rear end out of a S13 240SX, and I pulled the axles off and cleaned up everything. I now see that one side is longer than the other. When I measure from the center of the diff to the inside edge of the wheel hub I do not see the same no matter which way I put it back together. I guess I expected one way to be equal distant from the center of the diff to both sides, but that is not the case. Which side does the longer axle go on?
