Im interested in a rear 6x9 setup similar to this

Has anyone done this before?? would they sound good open air??

My setup right now isJL TR650CXi 6.5" Front SpeakersJL 300/4 Slash Series AmpPanasonic Deck

I would be using some of JL Audio's 6x9's for the rear. Im looking for some more bass without the bulk of a subwoofer.

Put a 8" in each quarter panel. No bulk, no visibility, no problem

Of course use lots of sound deadening/Dynomat

That would sound like mud. Any speaker will sound awful in "open-air" and it gets worse for large speakers running full range attempting to reproduce low frequencies without an enclosure to react with. That is a lot of effort to go to for something that stinks. With a 240, there are so many better options. For something simple yet effective, put a board between the seat pass through space and mount a pair of 8" back boxes to it, get a pair of 8's and call it good...or you could even put self enclosed wall speakers in the same configuration.Actually, simply putting the correct (165mm) speakers in the rear deck would be much better than that configuration, and would allow the seats to be folded up, making for a smaller, tighter interior volume which equals a car that is quicker to heat or cool, less road noise, etc. I am assuming the ONLY reason that person did it that way is because he removed the seats therefore speakers in the rear deck would also be open air at that point, but he could have easily put a divider back up...probably just as quickly as that "jeep-like" configuration he built.
