really quick alignment Q

All over the world, Nissan products are involved in road racing, track days, time attack and autocross.

I Autocross often and have my alignment set up for it as my 240 is not a daily driver, but I have one question. I always hear about toe-in/out measured as "1/8 inch"...in some fraction of inches. My alignment shop uses a laser machine that measures in degrees. How many degrees is 1/8 inch? 1/6 inch? I know it's sort of a lame question but I didn't find anything online when I looked around. Help?

i had the same problem when i went to do my alingment, the thing with alingments is they change on driving prefrence. since this sounds like your baseline just do .1 degree in, on both front and rear and see where that gets you

alingment is all prefrence. gotta start with a baseline and adjust it how YOU like it.

yeah, it just bugs me that there's not a conversion easier to find. Surely I'm ot the first person to ask this. BTW my current setup (more drift than autocross) is:

Front Camber: 2 degreesCaster: 6 degreesToe: 0 degrees

Rear Camber: 1.8 degreesToe: .05-.1 degrees...I think.

I'm planning on setting it up for earlier accelleration on corner exits (autocross), will probably try:

Front camber: 2 degreesCaster 6-6.5 degreesToe: 0 or -.1 degrees

Rear Camber: 2.3 degreesToe: .25 degrees

I think it depends on what your tire size is. I'm just guessing here, so if someone can correct me, please do. The angle can just be represented by a triangle that has the overall tire diameter as the hypoteneus. The side opposite the angle is half the 1/8" toe setting. If you take the inverse sine of opposite/hypoteneus you get the angle. For my tires, which have a diameter of about 23.9" the angle would be about 0.15 degrees.

Now, this is assuming that you're talking about a toe setting that is 1/8" difference between the center of the front of the tires to the center of the back of the tires.

I have a bad feeling like that whole thing made absolutely no sense.

What you said makes perfect sense. That's exactly what the deal is. "1/8-in toe in" mean different things on cars with different overall tyre diameters. That's why it's always worthwhile to take the extra time to convert back to degrees when you change your alignment.
