Ok, my friend is contructing our web page, and I wanted to include some trivial data on our two support vehicles. The first is a 1987 GMC 1ton phone truck. It has a 292 inline 6 with a 4 speed manual. The second is a 1994 15' cube van with over hang equipped with a fuel injeted 350 and an auto. I SERIOUSLY want to pit these two in a race at a dragway for the shock value. The cube van is dragging around probably another 1,000 lbs. in spare parts, tools, and fuel. The phone truck is a truly gutless wonder. The 292 was a joke that somehow made it to production. How about if we attached the car trailer to the cube van? I'm betting the cube could smoke a bling-blingin' civic though. So, here it is, and if we do it this sumer, I will post results. What do you think would win?

WEll you said the truck was a joke, I voted for the Van!I guess Blink Blink civic means 60 pound wheels, bumper full of bondo, and a trunk full of old porno ;) as well as no air, or oil filters.

I vote for a kid hopped up on model glue on a Razor scooter. You didn't mention whether the phone truck will be able to extend the bucket ahead of the truck after the start. It could be lowered to trip the lights far ahead of the truck.

The bucket could also be used to smash the van off the road...we definitly need clarification on this.

By "Phone Truck" I mean it's the aluminum utility box. Not the cherry picker model, you can't race a cherry picker man...jeez. :) If you listen real close to the exhaust note of the 292 it wheezes a faint "IthinkIcanIthinkIcanIthinkIcan...)

P.S. We did find a kit to put in a 500ci caddy engine.

Sorry, but that would be a prefect waste of a supercharger. That thing gets 6 mpg. It gets 6mpg towing fully loaded, it gets 6mpg coasting downhill with a tailwind, I'm sure it would get 6 GALLONS per MILE if I put a supercharger on it, and it wouldn't go any faster. Ask around about the 292, I bet you $5 people in the know start laughing.

we had a 292 in a bucket truck at one of my old jobs, it did it's job well. My 74' Nova had a 250 six from the same family of engines at it served me faithfully and pushed that bucket up to 90mph on a nice 1/2 mile straight. Taken into context what it is and what is logical to expect from it the 292 gets a bad rap.

the bid inline 6? inline sixes measuring 292 c.i. have been the workhorse of the GM fleet as far back as 1967 at least. my first beat rig was a 1968 chevy half ton stepside longbed, ugly as your mother with her teeth out, and beat all ta hell. it may be a gutless wonder, and the old ones may have sounded like diesels, but that engine is the energizer bunny of utility world. dont knock it till ya try it

I'm sure it's a workhorse, but I'm just not sure the operating cost is worth it in this age of technology. P.S. If you ever have to pull the head on one, seal the head bolts and take the rockers off. Otherwise, numberous bent pushrods will ensue.
