hi! it seems like one of the best way to vent the heat from a turbo manifold is to have a vent right above/near it... I probably don't want to buy a hood but rather, cut a hole and put grills on it.

that's sounds like something stupid to say but just wondering if anything has done something like this?

I said pratical/realistic because rain/dust/dirt/prankers will have to be considered just wondering if anything has anything positive to show me?

well,i think the best and easy way, and that works really good and cheap, is to put spacers into the hood hinches were it bolts to the hood, and alot of ppl have done this, and it lowers the temp by alot, so maybe this might be better. but maybe your idea might work too,

I know there was a guy on here who's cut a hole in his hood for the turbo or side mount intercooler (made it the "o" in his nismo logo on teh hood, haha).

You just need to make some sort of protection for it for when it does rain (I think he had a problem w/ this too). Being in socal, you should be ok for a few months, haha.

Or, you could mold an ebay scoop on top & make a hole there.

It would be unique points, but actual gains are questionable... keep in mind this will also mess w/ the airflow/aerodynamics of your car since there is now another flow/resistance path(neglibly, but so is adding the hole, so maybe it all just cancels out).

Dunno how it worked. You'd have to ask him.

if you are all about DIY, you can do a drop vent

http://www.hachiroku.net/mod/d....html

done on a corolla, can do it on your 240 also. I think im going to end up doing it since my car overheats a little when i drift for a while. I have the hood spacers too and I don't know if it works or not but it looks pretty cool. Eventually im going to buy the uras vent and rivet it to my hood and just cut a huge hole in the middle of the hood.

just run without a hood. I did that once, I was wrapping up a header swap and needed some lunch so we rolled out with the DE in the wind. Temps were real cool and the weird looks were fun.

Doesn't raising the rear of the hood cause a safety problem though? The hinges would be over the top of the stops that keep the hood from moving rearward in an accident. One of the guys on a Nissan truck forum that I frequented when I had my pickup turboed his KA and molded the scoop from a Z31 into his hood. Worked pretty good.

Turbo magazine's project supra had a CF vented hood that they cut more channels in near the turbo, dropped the under hood temps quite a bit, somewhere in the 20 degree rang if i remember right.

Thats the link I was trying to find. I like the vent better than a scoop.

I never thought about the safety issue with putting spacers under the hinges. ..

I suggest using a pick axe to make speed holes in your hood like Homer Simpson.

Ok, now that is off my chest, isn't the fundamental idea that as you go faster a low pressure area develops over the hood, and that low pressure area sucks air out of the engine bay?
