While one guy pulled the window back out of the frame, the other reached his long *** arm down inside the window and flipped the lock. With a coat hanger, or some solid bar to pop the lock, it would have been even easier. I have to give them kudos for going at it with such gusto, and doing it without any tools.
As to how to avoid such scenarios, I've been thinking about that myself. You'd have to weld some sort of eave / overhang along the top of the doorjamb, and make it long enough to cover the first inch or so of the window when it is rolled all the way up. To have that work though, you'd need some sort of auto up window that lifts it up after the door closes.
If you were to do that, they'd probably just break out the back window, assuming that there was something worthwhile in plain sight. They had a 4-5 year old kid with them, who could have easily fit through my coupe's rear quarter window.
Ideally, I'll eventually be getting some good impact/shatter resistant window film (tint), and something to secure the windows in the full upright position. The front window is hard to smash out, and same with the back. Reenforcing the back and sides with the tint will make them a serious pain in the *** to pry out.
