I was visiting a friend of a friend in San Bernadino county somewhere. After getting out of the car and closing the door, I realized that I'd left my keys in the ignition. There were three guys hanging out in front of the apartment that I was going into. I asked one of the 15ish year old kids with $5000 diamond studs in his ears if he had a slim jim. He didn't... neither did his buddy, with the same, stupidly huge earrings.

The third guy, a fool with more than enough jail house ink to explain the "In loving memory of..." t-shirt that both of his friends were wearing, offered to get into my car for $10. That's cheaper than having the locksmith do it, and anyway...

Counting the time that the three guys wasted on the driver side before I told them that the passenger window was easier to get through, and using no tools other than some wanna be Leatherman style keychain, they got into the car in under three minutes. That's with the windows rolled all the way up, and without permanently damaging anything.

The lesson that I learned.... don't leave anything you value in your 240.

don't tell ANYONE how they opened it.

some kids are slick with that though, they're very mechanically inclined and when info on how to break into/steal a car gets out, it's not long before those cars are prime target.

I'm buying an alarm and shaving my handles for 50lb poppers. but i have an idea how most people do it now.

While one guy pulled the window back out of the frame, the other reached his long *** arm down inside the window and flipped the lock. With a coat hanger, or some solid bar to pop the lock, it would have been even easier. I have to give them kudos for going at it with such gusto, and doing it without any tools.

As to how to avoid such scenarios, I've been thinking about that myself. You'd have to weld some sort of eave / overhang along the top of the doorjamb, and make it long enough to cover the first inch or so of the window when it is rolled all the way up. To have that work though, you'd need some sort of auto up window that lifts it up after the door closes.

If you were to do that, they'd probably just break out the back window, assuming that there was something worthwhile in plain sight. They had a 4-5 year old kid with them, who could have easily fit through my coupe's rear quarter window.

Ideally, I'll eventually be getting some good impact/shatter resistant window film (tint), and something to secure the windows in the full upright position. The front window is hard to smash out, and same with the back. Reenforcing the back and sides with the tint will make them a serious pain in the *** to pry out.

Actually I plan on making the ultimate kill switch, i'll have a lock on each fender that I can undo.. then the whole engine + front of vehicle comes off and I can store it in my house

I'm trying to think of a good way to stop people from breaking into them..

There is a better way......... Let them steal it. Then when the Lo-Jack leads the boys in blue to their door you get the satisfaction of them being caught. :)

I don't like the idea of lo-jack or on-star, I am a private person and I don't want anyone to be able to track me or my car at all times. Now one of those personal homing devices that you can buy from places that sell surveilence equipment, thats another story.

Need security?

Wire one of these puppies into your ignition. Do it right and it wouldn't be worth the time tracing wires to bypass it. I'd wire one up if I had the time and money.

that would be perfect! only you need SW installed. if only it were standalone, then i'd get rid of the turn start and make a push start, only the button is thumb print activated. :D

****, buy a small mobo with flashram instead of hard drive to hold the op-sys, hook it up so the mini-puter boots up when you turn the key, and car doesn't actually start until it scans and confirms your thumb or fingerprint. The wiring for that would be ****ing insane! I may try that one day

Lo-Jack is good and all, but given police response time to a place like Watts, your car could be 3/4ths parted out in under an hour.

I had been thinking about that fingerprint thingy since compaq introduced them some years ago. But then again, I'm not electronically savvy and would not know where to start. By the way, I suppose lexus is using something similar to this in their smart-key technology no? Another option is a key pad/code activated ignition...(ala transporter).

my gf's bro in law said that the lexus thing in the commercial, where the guy "opens" the door with his fingers, is actually not what you think. He doesn't open the doors or the trunk with a fingerprint scanner, it's actually just a card in your pocket that will unlock the car when you get close enough. I thought it was a fingerprint scanner also, but I guess not!
