"Reading Ipod"

I recently bought a new 2017 Rogue SL. I can plug my iPod into the USB port under the dash and it usually works fine. But sometimes it says Reading Ipod, and nothing happens for over 5 to 10 minutes, till it starts working. If I turn it off or unplug it, then re-connect it, it continues to happen. This never happened on my previous 2011 Rogue SV. Is there something wrong? Can I stop it happening?

The most common source of this issue is in the wire (they don't last forever). Trying other wires or other iPods to diagnose the problem is my suggestion.
