So I ran out of gas, got a few gallons in a jerry can the next day and my 92 sr20 coupe wouldn't start. I swapped out the fuel filter, still nothing. To see fuel was making its way to the fuel rail, I pulled the line from the fuel filter to fuel rail at the fuel rail end. I put it in a plastic bottle and turned key to "on". Nothing happens. I try it again, and about a liter of fuel comes out into the bottle (use at least a 20oz, and clean it first if you want to recover the fuel).

My guess is that air was entrained in the fuel lines and was some how preventing fuel flow. Priming the system with the fuel line disconnected somehow fixed it. Thank god.

it could also be the fuel pump is on its way out. a lot of the time a fuel pump going bad will work intermittently and will decide to work only when it wants..........
