i have a problem with my 89 pathfinder's transmission. vg30i, re4ro1a, 4wd. it was slipping in all gears for a couple days, then it lost all bite and would not move at all. so, instead of mortgaging my house (these transmissions are not cheap) to have it rebuilt, i decided to do it myself. there were some shavings stuck to the magnet, but appeared to be from the rivets in the band, no other hard parts were worn. i bought a master rebuild kit, with the tech manual, and replaced all the o-rings, drive and driven plates (steel and steel/fiber rings that make up the clutch packs) , gaskets, ball bearings in the valve body, everything by the book. or so i thought. after i got it back together and put it in, filled it with fluid, ran it at idle until the fluid level was perfect, i got in, shifted into reverse, eased on the gas, and was moving! only i was going forward. all gears move the vehicle forward. it would move in park if it wasn't for the parking gear. after checking the troubleshooting part of the manual, and doing the first and second most obvious culprits, the fluid level and the control linkage, the third and fourth choices were disheartening. the forward one way clutch and the reverse clutch are three and four. i don't want to have to take the thing out again, but it looks like i might have to. does anyone here have any ideas before i do? i did not replace the shift solenoids (three of them), the lock up solenoid (one) or the the other one that i can't remember the name of right now. and i didn't replace them because it was shifting fine before i tore it down. and i don't think that the two clutches in question could be put in wrong and still have everything go back in correctly. please help. if i left anything out that might help please let me know.thanks, john

first of all very impressive you takled that!! the fact that it is not shifting gears leads me to believe you have the shift valve not lined up correctly with the shift lever. this is located in the pan. this is the lever that pushes a valve back and forth through the valve body. this is where your shift linkage out side the trans connects to the inside to route fluid through different portions of the valve body. once you remove the oil pan visually look where your shifter linkage is attached but on the inside of the trans. you should see the lever that moves when you move the shifter. the ear on the lever should be inside a slot on the valve. if this lever does not appear to be in any thing either your valve has slid in your valve body or it is just not lined up correctly.

Also when useing the trouble shooting section you have to realize the text there is assuming the trans is assembled correctly.

nistech, thanks for the tip on where to start and thanks for the kudos for tackling the job. it's the same way i tore down my first motor; too cheap to pay someone else! i haven't had a chance to get the pan off yet, but i will let you know what i find.thanks again, john
