Re-using my tires

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

First post!We just got our EX35 and we love it! It's my wife's car and she is really enjoying it.We live in Quebec and the law obligates us to have winter tires by next week.So we are going shopping but first, we are wondering if our old winter tires would work. They are only 1 year old.

My previous car was a BMW330i and the winter tires on them were Dunlop Studdless 225/45R17 90Q.

The EX35 requires a 225/60R17 so I'm wondering if the '60' can be substituted with a '45'! I know this is the aspect ration but I don't know what it means and if it's OK...

Thanks for your feedback!

Basically it means your sidewall is narrower on the 45 compared to the 60 tire. Your car will ride lower which is not always the best thing in snow. Your speedometer will indicate a faster speed than what you are actually doing, so if you travel at what you think is the speed limit you will be obstructing traffic..(eg..indicated speed is 80km/hr.. actual speed is 72 km/hr) plus your odometer will be off. If you travel approx. 900 km as indicated you have only gone about 810 km. In short.... get winter tires in the same size as the all seasons your EX came with.

Here is a tire size comparator : http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Keep in mind that Infiniti put V rated tires as OEM, for a reason. The car is fast! That being said, Nokian makes a 225/60/17 V rated tire, called the WR G2 SUV. This is an all season tire that carries the snowflake of a winter tire. I believe it satisfies the Canadian requirement for winter tires.

Thanks for the feedback.

The WR G2 SUV sounds like a great idea if I don't have to shell 100$ per year to replace/re-replace my tires. That's 400$ in the lease time of my vehicle!

The problem is, they seem to be impossible to find! I called 7 shops, a couple tire-specialized places and all say that it's over for the season. The last one even told me he called Nokian and was told that it goes to next season... Maybe I'm too late :\

You might consider spending $1000 and buy a set of aftermarket wheels and 225-60-17 winter tires. At the end of your lease sell them. I got a new set of cheap alloys and Michelin Xi2 17s and they came in right at $1K US. Since the EX has a pretty standard bolt pattern you should be able to beat the new price with used wheels if you shop.

Do you have some pointers toward where to shop? Do you mean sites like kijiji or the like? As in used from people or you mean used from companies? What should I look at when I look at the tire? I don't want to be sold used & finished tires!

The main issue is the law states that December 15th, we need winter tires. That's a week from now

TIRERACK.COM ships pretty fast to Canadian's.

We get Tires to Alberta, from Reno Nevada in about 4-5 Days.

Call them and see what they can do for you.

Do the Dollar conversion and don't forget, you need to find a Shop that install them for you... so add that on to the total as well.

If you had posted this last year, I could've bought these snow tires of you for my Fiancee's 3-Series! DOH!

Try shopping Ebay and the Nissan forums. TireRack and Discount Tires has some bundled packages that you can bolt on yourself.

I have some Bridgestone Blizzacks mounted on steel wheels that I run on my wife's Honda. These tires are the wrong size and the speedo is about 5MPH fast. The tires work fine in the city for the short distances that she drives.
