Re-set ECU

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I bought my EX used and thought it always shifted a little unpredictable for me during hard acceleration from almost any starting speed... (off the line, at 40mph, 60 mph) etc... just never smooth ... holding lower gears too long, high revs before kicking into the lower gear. the feeling of slipping - etc.

Found the instructions on the G35/G37 forum to reset the ECU. Mine needed to forget how the old fart that used to own this drove it and start learning that I like to give it a little gas. Well I just did this last night and drove it a bit and the AT does feel better under hard acceleration. Very happy I tried it. Only took 5 times to get it!

Here are the instructions copied from that post:

"Read the process a few times before you try to do this its ALL ABOUT TIMING:

1) With the key in your pocket/car, push the Engine Start button TWICE (so the car is fully on, but not started)
2) Within three seconds of the car "ON" (again NOT started), Floor (all the way down) and Release the gas pedal fully 5 times within 5 seconds. Do not do this too fast.. 1..2..3..4..5
3) Wait 7 seconds then floor the gas pedal and hold for 10 seconds. After that 10 seconds the Check Engine Light will start to blink slowly.
4) Release the pedal and floor it down once again and hold for 10 seconds. After these 10 seconds the check engine light will disappear then begin to flash much more rapidly. After you have done the following turn the car off and then back on. The ECU is now reset!!

Again, this reset is all about timing, if it does not work for you, try try again until it does!

My suggestion on getting the timing down is have a CD or ipod playing (no sound) and use that clock to count.

I looked in the FSM for the 2008 EX, and the instructions you posted look like the steps in the FSM (EC.pdf page EC-108) for "ERASE DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE II (SELF-DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS)". It sounds like this just erases Diagnostic Trouble Codes from the ECM. I'm not sure that it'd have any effect on the "driver-adaptive learning algorithm" in the transmission.

Someone on another forum said "you may be thinking of the Easy ECU Reset Procedures. There is nothing there for resetting your 5AT's TCM (transmission control module). However, I believe I saw somewhere that the TCM would be reset if you disconnect your Positive battery cable for 12+ hours or disconnect both battery cables then touch the disconnected +/- cables ends together for a bit (along with all other electronic function control modules)."

whatever it is, it sure worked. AT much smoother and 'logical' when shifting.

Just a follow up to the amazing difference this made to my overall enjoyment of the car.
Downshift delay / lag when going about 40 and punching it has dropped in half at least. It no longer holds gears too long after easing up on the gas. All my little issues have been pretty much resolved.

still wish it had paddle shifters or their own 'tiptronic' style of shifting...

I used to have a Celica and leaving the battery unplugged would reset the ECU. Once I taught my girlfriend how to drive a manual in it, and after her stalling so many times it idled way high. Resetting it fixed it.

As far as the adaptive driving system in Infinitis, my service guy said it changes very slowly as the engine ages. So maybe if you did something like add an intake, it would not be optimum initially until it adapts. I don't know about any of that.

XIS: Did you loose any "settings"?

Nothing lost but frustration from unpredictable shifting behaviour! All is good. Per the OP on the G37 forum, this is the benefit of doing it as described above instead of unplugging the battery. You don't loose settings or phone books or nuttin'.
