Hi guys, it's been awhile but my kid just brought the car home from the school for the first time in awhile. I know it was addressed before and I was looking in the archive. The doors are starting to lock quickly and I'm affraid he will get the locked in the car syndrome. In looking at the archives it sounds like that relay (?) under the dash.

I've seen 2 things: buy the part (where and what exactly?) (part number?) And how much to expect to pay? (new/used?) Any crossover from other Nissans?

Or the solder method. Still not clear what I would need to do if I go this route. Unsolder and resolder? I have a normal size gun. Would I need a more precise gun?

The problem is that he is going back to school and if I do it I would have to drive there and not have access to all my stuff to do the repair.

Any advice is appreciated.

Its could be one of the door lock timer(under dash) or the latch actuator or both.

Part number has changed from what it use to be as well as price (I think its gone up).

Your best bet is caling Joe at http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/splash/ ... ?siteid=55

I would start with the door lock timer which is a bit easier to replace.

If all of the doors are locking at once - without anyone pressing the lock button - it's the door lock timer. I soldered mine and it lasted for about a year until it started acting up again. All you need to do is pull the door lock timer from under the dash (it's wedged in there somewhere around the steering column) and re-touch each of the solder joints. It's tedious. You may need to add solder to some of the joints if they are lacking. Just make sure you melt each joint so that any cracks in the solder will flow back together.

Best bet is to replace it - Infiniti of Scottsdale quoted me about $120 for a new unit.

Thanks guys. I think they are all locking. My fear with the soldering is if I screw it up at all nothing works, correct? I only have small windows to work on the car when he comes home.

I saw this on ebay (not sure if the link will work) but it's the first one when you put in infiniti door lock timer.

Is this the one that will work for my 93 J30? I thought for the price at least I could do the solder thing and have an extra just in case it didn't work. Thanks

I'm fairly certain the G20 and J30 door lock timers are incompatible.

Well I forgot about the door locking issue as my son didn't say anything about it getting worse. We were at his college yesterday and guess what? It's worse and he forgot to tell me. It turns out 2 of the doors won't open (passenger front and drivers side back). Is this still possibly the timer or is it more likely the latch actuator that was mentioned before. Is there one for each door?
How hard to change that out?

Darn kids.

I found somewhere the the number for the door lock timer is 28451-C9977

I found none available but I found some C9978's Any chance they would just be an updated version and work in my 93?

Thanks Swimshark. I did get the part. Waiting for my son to come home for spring break or call crying he can't get out of the car in which I'll have to drive to his school and put it in.

Well put timer in and all doors work. Had a sticky rear lock (made a -d-d-d-d-d-d-d sound) took door panel off and lubed up. Works now but hopefully not actuator. Drivers door still locks as soon as I pull on the handle (Is that the way it's supposed to work?) but all doors lock and unlock which wasn't the case before. (The front passenger door tries to lock but needs help by pushing the button) If I manually unlock the door or use the power lock button it won't lock automatically. Is that right?

I am very curious what you did or how you did it when fixing this issue. I have the same problem you do and Unable to open the doors, passenger and rear behind driver. I might have not explained this issue correctly to swim shark because he sent me the internal parts that go inside the door to fix the issue. Have not done it as of yet and I am guessing you replaced a part situated under the dash/steering wheel, correct? Swimshark has been very helpful on how to get the door open but do not want to force the door open by breaking something inside it when it does not have to be done. Can you go over a step by step on how you fixed it? Thanks very much. Daughter is home from spring break and need to get it fixed.

Yes, the underdash thing took me 10 minutes. Is that what you're looking for? The back door tried to unlock. Trying to unlock it manually felt like it was binding on something. So I crawled into the back seat and just kept locking and unlocking the switch manually (including someone pressing the unlock button on the passenger door). It eventually un locked properly. So I took the door apart when it was open. There is a philipshead screw under a plastic cap in the armrest. (You pop out with a screwdriver) I also pried out the back cover gently for the door handle. (on the side of the handle attachment if you use a small screwdriver you can see how it pops out.) Also you pop the cover with a small screwdriver for the light on the door and there are 2 philipsheads screws for that and then shove it through the hole so you can get the panel off. If the panel has never been off it will be hard to pull the panel off. I recommend a "popoff" tool for panels but a long screwdriver with some duct tape wrapped around it to not scratch. but if you pull from the bottm it should come off. There is a white plastic "thing" I assume is the actuator near the back of the door attached to the inside and the rods for the lock and the door handle go to. That seems to be where I was binding up. I sprayed like crazywith lithium grease around in there and the latch. I could not see where it attached so I'm not sure if that was it but it has been working for a couple days. My college boys car so I doing the spring break thing also. I hope this is what you're looking for. Let me know.

@Amadauss1: if you got a "pull-a-part" style junkyard, you might get lucky getting one there. i went to one near me, and they priced that module as a relay($1.50), better than spending around $80 on ebay for one. at least when i had a similar issue, they were around $80 on ebay. the problem i had was the passenger front door wouldn't lock properly, sometimes i would have to press the button on the inside like 5+ times to get it to lock, the electronic lock never locked it all the way. I replaced the part that it sounds like swimshark sent ya, and that fixed it. its was kinda complicated for me, but i was able to pull it from a car, so if i broke any plastic parts taking it out, i knew what to do in my car to prevent it... lol

Thank you both for responding, So, sciguy6, what you are saying is it looks like you think both parts might be needed although the quick fix could have been the grease to get everything working again and I have the same issue so it seems I might also need both but not sure. I trust swim shark because he has done so much work on his J's and knows his stuff so when I explained my issue he suggested I replace the parts that go into the doors. So I am guessing the parts I got from him will be needed as you have had to do the lithium grease to get it to work and could break down again over time (hopefully not :) ). My only thought would be do I need the actual timer under the dash or will the other parts to be put into the door panels themselves fix the problem? Only way to find out is to get to work and see. I will replace the door parts (actuators i think they are called) and see what happens. I do have a pry bar that I got at autozone which comes in very handy for any car. I just posted a radio change I did in the car with some pics and the pry bar which is not very big, came in very handy. Thanks again.

So Amadauss. Did you get it fixed? My son left and it still was working. I'm assuming it will act up again but we'll see. The radio will be next. May have to go aftermarket as it's CD player doesn't work and it won't hold stations.

Hate to say it but after doing the radio pulled in 5 other directions so did not get to it as of yet. I have been looking around some used car junk yards to see if I can get that part for under the dash. She went back to school and hopefully will be home next weekend and I will do my thing. Thanks for thinking about me. By the way, that is her pic as a little girl in my avatar.

Cute young lady. I was assuming it was an older pic as you said she was away. That's the way I picture my kids even though my J30 driver is away and 21 (In Wisconsin and legal to drink, ouch) and my other 2 are 18 and 23. they all have cars with issues (I have to change a gas tank from a 86 Lincoln Town Car tomorrow and try to get 2 door to work) My Vette needs the door fixed and a rear toe in adjusted and I am trying to sell my "project" 87 Bronco because I have "no time". Life has a way of doing that. I am going to have an IT guy at work do the solder thing to the old unit (Who is a big car guy also). Will let you know if it works. May not be for a while though, he's busy also.

good luck. I see quite a few J30's around. You may want to let the junkyard call around. I know most the the ones around Chicago have a hotline to other yards. That was going to be my route until Shark came through.

Well talked to the kid and it's still working (all doors!) so far so good. Thanks all.
