Re-Painting Scratch Shield Paint

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I was told my a body shop, they can color match the EX Scratch Shield Paint, they cannot re-paint any parts with the same paint. I guess if you need to paint a panel, you end up with one panel painted in regular paint with the balance of your car in scatch shield. My guess is that it will show over time. This might be a down side to our paint. Scott

I had to have my hood and fender repainted after a tree branch stretched it.

They used a high qualilty paint and you honestly can not tell the difference by looking at them. If you run your hand over the panels you can feel a slight different in clear coat.

It's not something to worry about honestly...the scratch sheild wears off at the 3 year mark.

Why do you suppose Infiniti as far as I can tell isn't using scratch shield paint on any 2010 models after only using it for 2 years?

Thank you so much, this is helpful. I was bumped at a stoplight, the only thing on my bumper that showed was the lower black area. A very, very small dimple and a small scuff mark, I think the scuff mark will come out, it broke the plastic pin holding the bumper bracket, I was able to replace for two dollars, just like new. The body shop told me that they would need to replace the entire rear section to replace the lower black section, no paint was effected. I think I am going to leave it alone, I am afraid I would be opening pandora's box for such a small mark on the black section of the bumper. It really made me mad, it's so hard to keep a new car nice.

I bet the reason for dropping the paint is related to "repairability". In California, they have really reduced the number of high quality paints available. I do think Infiniti had a great idea. I was told by two body shops that they could not duplicate the original "Scratch Shield" paint. They can match the color, use a good paint. Anyway you look at it, if they repaint any part of your car, the paint will not be the same. I really don't think the scratch shield paint added to there sales numbers, so why not change to regular paints, those that can be repaired without question. Just my 2cents

Maybe they still have a bunch of 45-Gallon Barrels of the stuff kicking around, that they are trying to use up.
