Well I am running pretty low comp pistons (8:1) in my E motor right now and its freaking slow as hell under 3k rpm's... so I and considering pulling out the old slugs and replacing them with some 9:1 comp for better low end and more HP with less psi.

I will use the new rings but use the old rod bearings. Question is.. will I have to re-hone the cylinders? The motor is currently bored .20 over right now and has around 1k miles on it.

Why not just re-use the rings with new pistons? If you think about it, if the rings have been warn in properly, just replacing the piston shouldnt have an effect on whether or not the engine will seal, unless the rings are not recommended by the new piston manufacturer.

I think Brian (Orion) did that with a stock piston once and it came out roses. Albeit, that was just replacing a stock piston, not a different CR or manufacturer.

Wow, 8:1?

Shouldn't need a re-hone. If it was done right, it'll be JUST broken in by now.

the new ones will be the same manufacturer (arias) as the old ones.

Yeah the 8:1 was a bit low for a DD car with only a super 60 turbo on it.. but I was planning on running a larger turbo in the future. I would like better low end.. and when I add more boost i'll go with a meth kit or something like that to keep things cool inside.

Why not just increase the timing? That will improve off boost driving quite a bit. I did with my 9.5:1 stock compression motor. I just have the timing retarded on boost. Much easier and way simpler.

If you do decide to swap pistons, no you don't need a rehone.

I considered the timing thing.. but I would rather do it right this way. The pistons on my E motor are actually designed for the DE motor with valve relief cuts and a slight dish in them. (10.6:1 comp)

Should I re-use the rings that are in the motor right now or just swap the used rings onto the new pistons?

If you're using DE pistons in an E motor, you're asking for trouble IMO.

If the valve reliefs are in the wrong position (3V vs 4V) you may have poor combustion and reversion, which leads to detonation.

IMO stick with 8:1, tune the off-boost portion up with timing and AFRs and just get a better turbo for high boost.

Most pistons I've seen come with rings no? Atleast aftermarket anyway. If they don't, they are cheap enough to buy, might as well get new ones. I always fvuck one up when I remove them anyway.

the DE pistons are already in the motor. The new arias do come with new rings but I heard that you need to re-hone the cyl's before putting fresh rings in there.

There have been arguments on both sides of that debate for years. With only 1000K you don't need any hone. If you did want to hone it, you can just buy a ball hone and do it yourself. I did all of my RB's with a drill and a ball hone.

then I would have to pull the crank out or could I do it with it still in the block?

Nope, crank can stay. Even if you bump it with the ball hone you're not going to damage anything.

but what about any metal flakes from the cylinder walls? Does the ball hone collect those as it hone's?

There won't be any flakes, it'll be like a wet talcom powder. You use oil in the cylinder while moving the ball hone in and out. Then clean everything with brake cleaner. I've done this on mutiple occasions with no issues at all.

Or turn the bloco upside down so the flakes fall to the ground

I guess lying on your back is feasible...

However, there aren't going to be flakes. Think of it like wet sanding a quarter panel. What you can do is cover the bottom of each bore with a rag or plastic or just about anything. This isn't brain surgery here, its a simple hone job that doesn't even need to be done.
