Before I dive in I want to preface by saying, I've always enjoyed cars and wrenching but mainly only ever did basic bolt on stuff, things like rebuilding an engine or fabrication were things I had no practical experience in but always wanted to do. So, here's were the story begins, and buckle up buttercups cuz this is a roller coaster. Just over 2 years ago I traded for this, running and driving Z. All I needed was an ECU (which we had) and a driver seat. Cosmetically it wasn't perfect, no major scratches or dents but some rust bubbling on the rear fenders. It was nearing winter so I figured that was a good time to take it in, do the work and be on the road in the spring (with plans to drift). The previous owner, also shop owner and friend, we'll call him the Wiz, let me use his carport and agreed to help where needed.

Also before moving it inside and between initial visits the hatch glass got shattered by a stray trash can in a storm, so that went on the list of repairs. But, I got to work cleaning it out, removing all the interior plastics and started disassembling the rear suspension (for upgrades and also access to the fender well). That's when we got a better look underneath.. this was no longer a couple month project in the slightest. He felt bad and let me commandeer a lift in the shop, to which I graciously accepted. Some tough work followed and I was faced with the truth.

What the F***. I was in way over my head with what it would take to repair this amount of rust damage, and while the Wiz did say he would help, I knew this was a lot and would pull him away from his shop business more than he had expected. I wasn't ready to give up though. I enjoyed having a project and learning as I went. So once piece at a time I started salvaging, cleaning, painting, and getting things ready to go back on.

The Wiz was a busy guy and let's face it, doing next to free labor on something like this wasn't at the top of his priority list, and I sure as hell didn't know how to do it. I needed a new plan, and I finally found one... Stick around for part 2 of the saga.

Ha Yes, he's also got a gray silvia sitting out there as well. After this build I'm sure he'd let me have my pick of cars to fix up next.

PART 2 - The Power Plant


In the midst of all the hassle with the body work and getting that up to par, there were lots of discussions we had on this subject. Decisions were made, changed, and then changed again. Once I came to grips that this was a longer project stumbled, or rather dove head first into the rabbit hole. While the stock VQDE would serve me just fine, I figured why settle for that. So we pulled it out, cleaned it up and sold it..

Got a line on a low mileage VQHR and I pulled the trigger on it. I needed new motor mounts so I also got those as well. Sadly no pics of the motor as its on a pallet in a secondary location (I still haven't laid hands on it lol). But here's these..

I couldn't put the motor in just yet as there was no counterweight on the back of the car (still waiting for bodywork). In that time I got talked into ditching the VQ altogether. It just so happened (as you may have gathered from the thread title) the Wiz had an RB25 sitting around..

This was it, the moment I was all in on this build. I gave it a quick wipe down and primer painted the valve covers and set it for the first test fit.

Immediately we found some problems. I would have to adjust the motor mount placement and find a way to get more clearance for the oil pan so the motor could sit back to where it needed to be. For placement, at a local metalworker the Wiz found these brackets (Originally for a Fox body LS swap) but they were perfect. I cut them up and, the Wiz, welded them in place.

Clearance, this could be achieved by modifying the sub-frame or the oil pan. I found exactly 1 company that made this exact oil pan conversion but for a pricey $3k. Option A it was, and first attempt looked like this..

But that wasn't enough. I needed more space. Then the idea was born, why not cut out that center section and put in some bar stock? I grabbed some 1/4" round stock and plate steel and set it in place. Along with the mounts, being a critical piece, I let the Wiz take over to ensure good strong welds.

(I did weld some of the vertical plates, as well as the filler top and bottom, not pictured, and it has been cleaned up, water sealed, and painted)

Since then I have jumped back to the rear of the car so I have not yet test fit the motor again with this sub-frame setup but I think it'll work just fine. Also because of that, I have not made the motor mount brackets (from motor to mount) but those will be in the works soon. That about concluded this segment, and in the next one you'll see how I overcame the struggle with this rust bucket.

Very cool, what transmission are you planning to put behind that? I would think the transmission tunnel clearance, shifter location and firewall clearance/oil pan clearance would determine the end result for motor placement.

I won't say too much cuz I'll cover it in a future add, but I'll be using, in part, the CD001 that came in the car. Hoping it won't change the fit for all those things but we should be doing a motor and trans test fit this week so I'll find out one way or the other.

PART 3 - Rebuilding Begins

At a local drift event last summer photographing and cruising marketplace (as one does) I found the solution to my biggest problem, A WHOLE NEW CAR. Well, a very stripped down shell anyway.

I was fine with it though because everything it was missing, I had. So I got a trailer and brought it home. It did have minor surface rust in a couple spots but it was easy clean up and some protective paint, it was good to go. Up first was swapping out the rear sub-frame with the silver cars that I had already cleaned and upgraded.

Next up was the knuckles. One of the bushings was bad and torn almost all the way around, sooo.. why not upgrade? Here I learned the lesson that not having the right tool can make things 100x harder. Eventually found it (Maddox bearing puller kit) and got both sides set, cleaned up and ready for install.

On top of that I had a bad wheel bearing and ball joint on one side. Could I replace just the single part needed? Of course, but my OCD hates knowing one part is newer and ya know, while I'm in there. I had wanted to go with the 370z hubs (also requires 370z axles), and likely will in the future if/when these go out. I couldn't just leave the knuckle hanging on the upper control arm so I had to break out a long awaited box (toe arms) to hold things in place while I acquired the rest of the suspension components.

To wrap things up for this post, I'll touch on what's happening with the transmission. The original idea was to keep the CD001 from the car and just make an adapter plate so it could bolt up to the RB25...

But that didn't happen, well not exactly. See, the Wiz had all the goodies, including an RB bell housing. The new layout would be CD001 body + plate + new bell, all welded together and it would look something like this..

We have now figured out we don't need the plate at all and can just weld the bell to the body (with some shaving and cutouts made). Since this is all tig welding aluminium, that part is up to the Wiz and is still in the works. Yes, it's a hallow trans (not the original) due to more fun stuff that I'll add here once we get to it. Stay tuned for the next installment, I almost have y'all caught up to current.

Looks like a lot of work. Hopefully you never pop that transmission and need a replacement on the quick!

Man, I watched the videos of the stuff they recovered from the Titanic, and it looks like that Z might have been on board!

As a restoration guy, BIG thumbs up for tackling that job. Keep us posted, and carry on!

Very true. It won't be absolute but trying to build everything to be damn near as bullet proof as I can.

haha it's likely, we couldn't figure out what could have caused that bad of rust, apart from being is some sort of flood where the back 8" of the body as underwater for sometime. I appreciate it but keep the thumbs up for now as the rusted one is now my donor car.

Part 4 - Handbrake and Extras

Welcome back everyone, mostly covering the install of the handbrake and touching on a couple other pieces. Let's get into it. First up was to install the coilovers. Pre-adjusted to match the height of stock. Install wasn't anything special, I did take apart the front knuckle assembly and just did some cleanup before throwing it all together. Passenger lower control arm bushing was seized to the car so I had fun with the grinder to remove the bad one. Once that was done I was able to hit each corner and get them put on pretty quickly.

Additionally before install there was light surface rust on the underside of the shock towers so I wire brushed that and put a couple coats of tractor paint as a preventative.

Next up was putting the handbrake kit together, I was kind of all over with the order on this but end result worked out. As stated this is the Henko Lab kit, came with everything (almost) and was pretty straight forward to install, just required some pre-planning for me at least going through it for the first time.

What wasn't included was a mounting plate for the actual handbrake. I will note that I bought this kit quite a while ago and pretty early in the build. Henko now includes a mounting plate in their kit, however it is just a flat plate. I could have bought just the plate from them but figure I could remake it easy enough and actually contour it to the tunnel so it was just hanging there. I started with a flat template and design, cut the shape and then incorporate the bends. Again, nothing a bench vice couldn't do, was just back an forth test fitting and making adjustments. Then I mocked up the placement and drilled out the holes. The 3 holes you'll see where the handbrake mounts DO go through the tunnel for added security. Because of this I did also have to change out the bolts that came with the handbrake for longer ones to ensure enough thread on the underside.

One of the "extras" here, the headlights. They were pretty nasty looking so I hit them with some Meguirs cutting compound and small electric buffer. Only took a few passes and were crystal clear again. To finish I wet sanded them, by hand, with 2k grit sandpaper and that's it.

Gained +1xp in welding. Where I had made the bends I cut the plate nearly halfway through, made it a lot easier to manipulate so this was just to strengthen it back up and then smoothed the welds out and painted it.

Time to run the plumbing. The center line runs from the master cylinder to just behind the speakers. I punched a hole and fed it up through into the 'T' adapter. You can see there is a hole in the splitter that you can mount somewhere. The way I ran it thought I couldn't find a good place to do that without the lines at a bad angle. With the grommet I put there it actually holds nicely, so unless something happens it'll stay like that.

For the rear lines was just a matter of drilling out into the wheel well. These grommets were included and already on the lines so that was nice. It took some working to get them in, but this placement gives a direct angle to where the calipers will be. Just be mindful not to drill into the gas filler tube.
Nearing the final step, I had to route the hose that would go from the reservoir to the master cylinder. You could also mount this inside the car but I chose to have it in the bay. Trying to find a good spot in the firewall to drill proved more difficult than anticipated. So I settled for sliding it through where the wiring harness comes through.

If you see the smaller wire to the left that goes behind the steering column, this was already ran through between the grommet and firewall already so I pushed the hydro line along side it. Being a factory hole, it had a rounded edge so I'm not so worried about it rubbing and cutting the line but I'm sure there are more "proper" ways to do this.

Last bit was to punch a couple holes in the little bay up front and mount the reservoir.

Ok, so actual last bit was putting the carpet in. An damn this was huge. Mentally I felt like it was finally a car again and super pumped with the progress. Still a lot more to do for sure but so far my vision is coming together. Yes, the handbrake is bolted in. No, I don't know if it's where it needs to be. Sometime down the line, not too far down, I will toss a seat in there and do a more final fit and feel as far as it's position, if there will be any interference or that sort of thing. An abrupt end to this segment but would love to hear what y'all think. Thanks for reading.

Part 5 - Under the Skirt

First of all I apologize for the long time between updates. As y'all can imagine this is a slow process but there's been progress so I wanted to catch everyone up, hopefully I don't miss anything.

Right away, and first up was the upgrade to the drum brakes. Well, not exactly upgrade as it was replacement. Originally I had the thought of ditching them altogether and building a locking pin into the hydro for times I needed the ebrake engaged for say..parking. I finally came to my senses and will keep the stock handbrake for that, but the pads were really worn out so in with the new. Never done this type of "repair" before and yea, those springs and the lever drop pin.. what a b**ch.

Once that was settles it was on to something a bit easier, more suspension. After a long awaited time the control and traction arms arrived, some of the last major pieces to get the rear end put together. Install was pretty straight forward on these, I may have had to unbolt the coilovers, I can't remember. Probably not necessary but made it a bit easier.

The next endeavor turned out to be a massive clusterf**k. The lift I was using had a hydraulic leak so if it wasn't on the stops it would slowly drop to the next stop. Now picture this, the differential on a maxed out single post trans jack, the car needs to sit halfway between it's stops (raising the lift every 10sec), and with the new bushings on the diff it did NOT just slide into place. It took the 2 of us a good 30-45 min at least till we got it set. I pray non of you have to experience that. But, after all that the diff was finally back in and bolted up. Then I got evicted from that lift..

Nearing the end of this update we have the most crucial part in order to put power to the wheels. An engine? Not yet. Axles are where it's at. I had my guy order them for me for a discount and after a few screw ups on their end, they came through. Now, I was told they were one thing but I did some searching and will call them what I suspect they really are. Also it was at this point I put in the axle spacers that came with my hydro/dual caliper setup.

Once that was all done it was on to the final piece that I had sitting around for the longest time. The sway bar. I would like to say this install was pretty easy, but of course it wasn't, here's why. I got this as a complete kit, front/rear sway bars and end links, as one of mine had broke so why not. I was about to bolt it to the end link when I discovered the 3 adjustment holes were too small. To be fair I could have had the front end links on the rear, I didn't and still haven't checked that honestly (I will), but what I did do, was drill them out to make it work. It was not fun. I hope I was wrong but at the same time I'm not wanting to do that again for the front. I digress, here it is..

Don't feel bad, drums are always a Chinese puzzle even for old timers like me. If you took a vote on "job most likely to f#ck up the new guy", drum brakes would probably win. I still take a reference pic every time before I start the job, and I make sure Parts has a spring kit on the shelf in case some little POS part turns into an unfindable rocket headed for the floor drain.

Thanks man. Yea I definitely tried to put them on the car 2-3 times before I had to sit at the table an figure out how they were supposed to go together, an still took me a minute. lol You're right about the springs, nearly got me.

Thanks for the update! Drum brakes are always a PITA puzzle. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I do them, I always struggle with them.

+1 vote for drum brakes suck.
I had to do one corner on my corvette when I replaced the knuckle after getting T-boned. What a PITA.

Part 6 - Steering and Stopping

Welcome back everyone. I finally have some time to sit and write an update for yall so get your popcorn cuz we have a lot to go through.

Diving back in now with the rear end of the car pretty much done it was time to turn my attention to the front and share some love. It started with a plan to rebuild the steering rack. Did it need it? No, but I've heard enough stories from drifters about the PS developing leaks due to worn seals and race conditions, so I figured it would be good future proofing. I picked up a seal rebuild kit for a few bucks and began disassembly. I don't know what the part is called, but the aluminium (?) locking collar that holds the main barrel together.. I broke it. The wrench I used was slightly over-sized and it was putting up a fight for some reason and it tore off a corner, then another. My choices now were to find a used replacement, junkyard pull or go for broke.

If I got a replacement I would still want to rebuild it and an OEM rebuild cost just as much if not more than aftermarket options. So I went for broke and got a new aftermarket rack.

Install was pretty simple, mostly because there's literally nothing else in the way. One of the hard-line connectors was seized to the line so it took some finagling but I eventually got it hooked up. The bushing replacement went smooth as the rubber ones were new and pliable and the bracket was straight forward. While here I did replace the steering knuckle (universal joint) and connected it to the column.

Up next was to break open a box I had sitting for a long time, the angle kit. Since I want this to be a street-able car, at least somewhat, I didn't jump right into a mantis kit. To me that would shift this to a more dedicated drift car and in all honestly my noob skill wouldn't be able to make the most of it anyway. So I landed on something in the middle, I hope.

Apparently the earlier versions of this kit would require you to shave part of the knuckle for it to sit properly, luckily they fixed that so this just bolted right up. It did take a number of times taking them off and on to get measurements and center alignment as close as I could by eye. This kit also came with a Tie Rod extender so I did have to remove the boot and install that as directed. Then did one final check all the way around before thread-locking were required and torquing the bolts.

This next part may cause some heat but let's get into it. Brakes, glossing over the part where I ordered a set of rebuilt rear calipers for the dual setup, I had my sights set on a BBK. The Wiz managed to find a full set of Brembos for a good price so I grabbed them. While they sit in his warehouse still unseen by me (do they even exist? :gotme ), I still needed an extra set of rears so I kept my eyes open until I found a set of Akebonos I just had to drive 3 hrs for, worth it. I never owned/experienced either first had so I tried to do my due diligence for choosing which ones I wanted as my main set.

There can certainly be an argument made on both sides (as there are many discussions on it) as to which is "better" but I think a lot comes to the pads, rotors, overall cost, etc. I sided with Akebono, people said they have a more balanced feel, better heat dispersion during cycling, less break dust. However, you do need additional mounting brackets for the front, new rotors and may cause wheel fitment issues on some OEM styles, but I digress.

The spray paint looked horrible so I sanded them down with 60 grit until they were smooth to the touch and prepped for paint.

This was my first time working with epoxy based paint and it was..interesting. They aren't perfect but I'm happy with the result, I topped them off with new bleeders and of course the decals. Pro Tip Get some small bottles to divide the paint into BEFORE adding the hardening compound. Add a fraction of the compound to each bottle as you need it. I could notice by the second coat it was already getting harder to work with and I imagine trying to do them all at once the paint would have been unusable by the end. I will say though, there is plenty of paint. I did 2 coats doing the entire caliper and had enough left over to probably do a 3rd coat.

As mentioned I did need these brackets, other retailers sell them, all comparable pricing, but I like the style of these. As noted on their site, you do have to shave the knuckles in a couple spots for them to seat properly. Oh, and make sure you put them on the proper side. I definitely didn't have them on the wrong side and go ham with the grinder before realizing it...

Alright, one final part of this update I'll touch on what's happening with the transmission. I have the pieces of an empty case, I have the guts, now it just needs to go together. Easier said than done for sure. I know absolutely nothing about the inner working so pretty much this entire part of the build is left to the Wiz on his practically non-existent spare time, to say it's taken a while. So here we stand..

You can see a lot of the gears and syncros were already together but I shoulder surfed and helped a little getting them into the plate. It was cool to see and get a slightly better understanding on how it all works. From here we will get final pieces in > attach rb bell housing to motor > set shaft into motor ensure alignment and everything > weld bell to case for a complete trans, EZPZ.

Honestly, that pretty much catches you all up to where things currently stand. I haven't been able to get down there as much recently so progress has slowed a bit along with cost of parts for next steps. One final thing I could use opinions on is what route I should take when it comes to turbo setup. The original plan was a large single as is probably most common with rb25s, but I also have the option to go with a twin setup (think rb26dett). I don't know the exact sizes of them to share right now, I will when I find out, but in terms of spool time, boost range, etc how they differ? When I get specs I'd like to know things like max psi, hp and figure out which setup would be best for my desired application for the car.

Man when I read you were trying to rebuild the rack yourself, I thought "OH NO!!! Just buy a new/rebuilt unit and swap it in". Glad to hear that's the route you ended up going.
Also, airflow to the brakes is VERY important at the track. Even big calipers and rotors with race pads will fade if they don't have sufficient airflow to cool them.

A lot of the turbo websites have fitment calculators and graphs and stuff these days.

Yea, I admit I get a bit overzealous sometimes with the ideas, but it was a good excuse to see the inner workings not from a YT video lol. Good call on the brake cooling though, can't say that crossed my mind so I'll be aware of that. Maybe I can work in some ducts or something to increase air to the wheel wells for that.

Thanks for the links, I'll check those out. I'm leaning more toward the twin setup for now but still a ways from installing any of that.
