Remind me where you're at again?

In our travels, we've GOTTA catch up and hang out.

The coil cover was a huge hit today (big show here in town). :)

Sunday update.

I didn't do the back seat as planned. Ambition started off a little slow, I decided to start the new gas tank. I measured up the old tank and decided to make the new one slightly bigger. I laid out the new panels and cut em out. I know the tank will be under the trunk floor and will rarely be seen but I still made it fancy! I'm kind of a sucker for a nice piece and I figured why not with the tank. Here is some pics of the progress, it turned out pretty good. I need to pick up some 1/2" bungs for a fuel out and return line. The filler cap is vented from factory so I wont have to weld in a breather. Once I weld in the 2 bungs I will plug one and put a schraeder valve in and pressure test it.

My father in law was over working on his hotrod and snapped a pic of me welding the tank up......Apparently I like to get as close to the weld as possible! haha

That is it for now. I really need to order up some new intake and exhaust gaskets so I can finish bolting up all the bits to the engine before I put it back in. Also I got some new rear rims from a friend but I haven't been able to pick them up. They are nice steel rim 15x10's so I plan on running a BIG tire! Until I get the rims I'm kinda stuck on progressing on the rear end. I want to get tires on the rims and set them in there so I can measure up an exact width of the rear. That is it for now.

any internal baffling in the tank?

also that VR bracket looks bomb proof, 1/4" steel is def overkill but you wont have vibrational scatter, thats for sure!

Yes there is 2 baffles in the tank, If you look close you can see the heat marks were I tacked it in. Is my vr sensor close enough to the trigger wheel? First timer here! haha, I am gonna need some help once it comes to start up time I'm sure!

Just ordered up a walbro 255 also, hopefully it gets here soon so I can finish up the tank.

Last build are you kidding! haha I am lucky I live on an acreage! I have a 37 ford coupe and a 34 chevy sedan that are future projects. also once the rbambler is done I really need to finish the interior on my hotrod. I think this summer will be year #4 without an interior....Its about time she gets covered in leather

Image

Also, I really have to finish my dads buick.......I think it has been a "project" for 6 years now!

Unfortunately the rbambler is the only nicoCLUB friendly build. Is there an off topic section I could post in? ahhaha thanks again for all the support.

Would 'Around The House' be closest to Off-Topic? I remember we had one but unable to see it now?

Thanks for the "other" section.... I will keep you posted if I start another project! haha.

I got a little bit of progress done tonight. The last tank I made was for my hot rod and it was out of stainless. I welded it at work and it was one of my first tig jobs. Needless to say there were endless pin holes. This time around I was hoping for better.....I didnt expect perfect! haha I pressured up the tank and found a whoping 0 holes! After that happened I thought I would start on the dash wiring, now that I have all the gauges. I got the grounds and the instruments lights wired up and called it a night. I like to wire a dash to a quick connect plug so it can go in and out very easily. I am going to do this again here except for the wide band 02 gauge. I am hoping to use this a "tuning" gauge and eventually swap it out for a matching autometer gauge maybe a pyrometer, oil temp, or hell even a clock!

Random question of the night: Anyone know how to wire up the autometer tach and speedo? can I use the stock speedo sender on the trans? Oh and never mind on the tach, I believe that comes from the edis6 or megasquirt.

Awesome fab work, man! Definitely subscribing to this thread. (Means a lot, as this is the ONLY thread I have subscribed)

And as far as the speedo, I would think you would use the sender on the trans, and the gauge should have some sort of calibration cycle.

Yes the speedo has a calibration cycle, push a button drive a mile, push a button, drive a mile, push a button and your done. At least thats how i did it in my hotrod. Autometer sells a pulse generator for chevy trans, it outputs 16 pulse's per rev. Anybody know what stock is?

thanks Ace. I am really enjoying the help I get from the board and having guys like you check it out help a ton!

super small update again, the weekend was kind of a bust for garage work. I picked up rims and tires my dad had bought for a hotrod project he is working on. The rear tires are massive!! 31" tall tires, on 18x10" rims. I am going to put a big tire in the back of the rambler and should have my rims and tires ready late next week. I had to throw the rims in though just to see! Needless to say a massive tire will look really good in the back!

Hopefully this week the fuel pump and new fuel level sender will arrive and I can finish up the new gas tank.

The factory speedometer sending unit works perfectly with autometer gauges. Calibrate it just like you mentioned and you'll be good to go.

Good news on the speedo, thanks Bwana.

l0nestar - If things go as planned it will only be 275hp this year :) Also I would consider myself lucky if the old straight six made 80whp!! haha stock, new it made like 120 and that was likely at the crank. It should be a whole new car to drive this year.

Got a little done tonight, I made a plate to cover the iac and what not. Also re-installed the piece that joins the water jackets together on the new intake manifold. I also brought in a 9" center section and some new blank axle tubes. Now i just have to dream up a jig to hold it all straight while I weld it together. Since I am waiting for my rims i figured I could get a head start on the rear. Oh i also port matched the s*** manifold to the intake gasket. It wasnt that bad but it wasnt good either.

I forgot.....Anybody know how to get the stock injectors out of the fuel rail? I removed the little retainer caps but I cant pull the injector out, I was able to get them to rotate but they wont come out at all. Is there a trick?

a pair of pliers and lots of lube...the rubber bonds to the rail and its a b**** to get out.
or you can press them out if you're careful from the bottom but this tends to damage the retaining clips.

GREAT SUCCESS!!!!

I got the injectors out! and took it upon myself to modify the stock fuel rail. I hated the return setup so decided it was time to cut it up! Below is what i did. I still have to clean up the fpr, but it did turn out pretty sweet. i cut a 3/8" coupling in have and drilled a hole in the one side to sleeve over the stock rail (I also drilled out the end of the rail first). then tig'd it on there. I also cut off the stock return line, grind-ed it smooth and welded a patch over the hole as it looked like it was brazed or soldered in there. next time i would cut a smaller patch as it was a pain in the a** to tig in such tight quarters. After a quick paint job and ruff mock up i think it turned out sweet. This is my poor mans way of doing a "fuel rail" haha. Anybody know were I can get some cheap injectors? looking for 750cc ish injectors that will support an hx35 upgrade down the road. On to the pics.

if you look close you can see the hole i drilled to sleeve the coupling over the stock rail.

Upgraded drop-in replacement injectors. Suby STi 'yellow' for EJ-25. You will have to find a vendor that sells individual since you will need 6 instead of 4. 555's are common and should support an HX35 nicely.

Internally the Subaru injectors are an updated design of the old JECS / Denso injectors that were designed 20+ years ago, but the connector clip is the same.

I'm still leary of the 're-flowed' (re-bored) injectors. Also, avoid 'Venom' brand that you find on fleabay - they are crap.

Also, you may want to add a dampened mechanical fuel pressure gauge at the beginning of your rail. Your rail looks good man. Glad you cleaned it up like mine.
