I am looking at buying a 240 with the rb30det swap. I was wondering how to get this to pass emissions in IL. I know that engines that come from japan are usually pretty good with low smog outputs but i am still worried. I know i have to get a cat because there is just a test pipe right now. They do not do the visual inspection anymore i dont think, and even so i've passed when my other vehicle had to have one (after failing 3 times i applied for a waiver and they had to look under my hood to make sure that some work was done in attempt to fix the problem). Any good suggestions will be appreciated.

I was sort of thinking along the lines of running several cats and maybe a lean tune for the day/hour of testing. In ill 1995 and older vehicles only have to pass once and then they never have to test again. Thanks

I had a 93 turbo hatchback... brought it from MI to IL over a year ago. Didn't require any emissions testing at all.

I'm unsure of when/how the "one time test" falls into play... as they have removed the systems for testing pre-obdII testing of cars.

I was under the impression that anything pre-obdII is not tested at all anymore.

You looking at Ben's car? Nice ride, I am jealous of that power plant.

First off, no OBD1 emissions testing for cars 95 and older. So your good there.

Second, I passed a tailpipe sniffer with my RB25det when I had a cat installed with flying colors.

Don't sweat it man.

Music to my ears!!! I really appreciate it, and as long as the last few details are worked out I am sure Ben will be happy too! I know the last time i got my vehicle tested i saw the old pipes and what not but i also saw an old Monte Carlo drive up and get waved through, until now i didnt think anything of it but it makes sense. Did you know that not testing saves IL $30 mil a year! Thats what i just read on their website. Well thanks again, and if for some odd reason i have to go and test, ill be back on asking for some advice lol. Peace

I wrote an extensive report in college on MOBILE 5 emissions modeling for hydrocarbons like benzene and exhaust gases. Emissions testing made almost zero impact on the overall emissions. Such a joke. Leave it to the bleeding heart liberal environmentalists to come up with emissions testing for individual cars. Thanks for pointing out another complete waste of taxpayer money.

I didn't want to read all the posts.

But there is no more emission testing for vehicles older than 1997/1996 anything older than OBDII/2 is not being tested in state of IL.

Dynometer are not being used any more, it took too much time. And there is starting to be less and less of older vehicles.

I have heard about this super long time ago, back when I was still in UTI, in like 2004. Ha those were the good old days

So if you live around Chicago area I can guarantee you that you will never be called up for emissions if you don't have OBD2 or newer vehicle.

Plus OBD2 and newer, if you don't pass emissions you will not be issued that renewal sticker for plates, in IL from what I know.

Darius- AMEN!

Thats what i was hoping to hear. The reasons y im a little paranoid is that on the last vehicle i had i spent $700 on a tune up and parts after i failed the first time and then i failed again, all to find out my thermostate wasnt working right. I also read this today: "• Vehicles of model year 1995 or before that were in compliance with the Illinois Vehicle Emissions Inspection Law on February 1, 2007; "

and was sort of worried about that. But even if for some strange reason i have to its nice to know that people are passing with just a cat. Thanks for the advice, ill post again if i get the car. PEace

Ok so to go along with what you all have been saying here is the email that i got from the Emissions

Vehicles that are 1995 and older are exempt from emissions testing. The law changed as of Jan. 1, 2008 to registration denial. 1996 and newer vehicles have to be tested and passed in order to renew the license plate sticker.

THanks all
