did a leak down test yesterday and found one of my cylinders was leaking at 32.5%

Looks like i will need to do a rebuild. Any suggestions on where this can be done and how much approximately it will cost for labor?

I am trying to decide whether or not to attempt the teardown/rebuild myself, and just send some parts out to get machined.

Also, does anyone have contacts to shops around the DC/MD/VA area that can work on the engine?

Thanks in advance!

Matters what you all want to do. If you are just trying to rebuild it enough to get it going or if you want to fully rebuild the motor. If you want to get it just running then you are going to need forged pistons, rings, and headgasket, but while doing this you would probably want to get ARP head studs. Also with the head gasket, I would recommend that you get a metal headgasket (1.2mm+). If you are going to do this setup then with all the parts (pistons, rings, headgasket, ARP head studs, and a full OEM gasket kit) and labor (bore, mill the head, assembally, and balancing) you are going to be looking at any where from $2200-2500.

If you plan on getting rods as well you are going to be looking at another $1800+.

If you plan on rebuilding the block and head....then that is going to be in the $5500-6k range. Also you might want to check around to see if any of the machine shops have an RB deck plate, becuase if not then you are going to be spending another $300+ on one.

If you can find a shop with a deck plate for any L6 (datsun 240/260/280) it will have the same bore/bolt spacing...

That sucks man.. but once you rebuild it, if you do it right, it'll be SO worth it.

Find a reputable shop to bore/hone your block. Make sure you measure it BEFORE it's assembled as a precautionary measure. IE check their work.

I don't see this costing more than 2000$ personally if you do it right. Have the shop assemble and ballance your pistons/rods with the rings. Do the bearings yourself! I'd definetely get some aftermarket pistons/rods/rings.

I would also personally go with some arp bolts for the connecting rods.. they're not that expensive.

Good luck, let us know what you chose to go with. Do some research on the right machine shops and make sure they're not redneck retards.

Thanks for all the input guys...I'm mainly worried about shops not being familiar with the L6, or worse claiming they know what they're doing and mess it up. Also cost is somewhat of a concern too.

Any RBs in the MD/DC/VA area that had work done on their blocks?

thanks again

I know you had to of been LOOK HERE before. There are guys with Skylines from your area that have lots of mods on their motors, so I'd hope one of them would step up to that question...
