If you have to "bang" on the starter to get it to start, that is a problem. Also, engine grounds make an enormous difference in how an engine runs, especially if your using the stock connection points. You said that it started and choked itself out...that sounds like either the FPR is not hooked up properly, you have very bad vacuum, or your spark plugs are f***.
If you run a vacuum test on the engine at base idle and it is below 15hg, you have problems. The only problem is that you will need to check the vacuum on all 3 throttle body's to verify their condition as well.
Kinda strange but the car I have now was reading exactly 15hg at base idle which is bad. I turned the boost up when I added a new fuel pump, yesterday, now after some really harsh driving I am getting 17~18hg which is really good...I am assuming that the engine was just caked with carbon deposits...not no more..lol.
