If the engine is in the car, I put the e-brake on, 5th gear on the trans and make sure the rear tires are on the ground.
If on the stand, (this is a little rigged) but I install a flywheel screw into the back of the crank about 5-6 turns in. I then use a 36" 3/8" extension and pin it between then flywheel screw and two other points on my engine stand, I apply my body weight + some on my p**** bar and the crank bolt comes loose.
Do this at your own risk, if your screw on the crank isn't far enough in you can rip threads out and f*** it up. I keep the 3/8" extension between the head of the screw, and the back of the crank pretty tight. This leaves a very tiny moment arm on the screw preventing bending stress, however it increase shear. I know my crank bolt was previously torqued properly and not stuck on there, so it loosens very nicely.
There are better ways to do this I'm sure, I'm just tired and not in the mood to think of them. cheers.
