Hi, This is my first post here. I search and could not fine anything about my question. Well my question is. If i was to mount a RB26 in the rear of a tube chasis, what kind of tranny could i use for this swap. Any thought or insight in this area would help.

thanks,BS

You'll probably need to go a bit more into detail to get any specific, applicable answers. Do you have the dimensions of the chassis?

99.9997% chance that it will require a boat-load of fab.

a butt load of fab and a ton of money, mabey use the front wheel drive section of the 26 and the stock 26 pan to mount over the rear end of your project, pics? or thoughts???

You are correct Fast-Datsun. it will be behind the driver. the wheelbase would be a 104".I'm look for a trans that will fit into the RB without to much work. Or going with the AWD setup of the Skyline. Can someone give me a price range for a complete suspension and brakes for an AWD Skyline?Including all the lines and everything. I'm want to get an idea of how much it will cost for parts. it is going to be a major project. LOL

thanks

you cant use the suspension off a skyline if youre making a mid engine car tube chassis car... thats counterproductive

and a rough estimate? 10,000 for a transmission. minimum.

you are talking about a super expensive build even on the cheap side.

Go to a junkyard and just rip the tranny out of a Ferrari or Lamborghini, that should work!

What you are suggesting would be ridiculously expensive and require a lot of custom parts.

Might want to look into the Tommykaira cars. They had a mid engine AWD setup with an RB26 in one of their "production" cars.

How about a RELIABLE ( ) Chrysler 42LE? I saw on a Chrysler Forum, pics of a Twin Turbo dune buggy with a 42LE tranny. (Supossed to have 300+ hp)

if your planning on putting the rb in a rear engine dragster, i would get the trans adapter plates for a powerglide and run a shorty PG and it should work. we run a shorty power glide in our dragster but it has a big block chevy instead of an RB though.

so your building a custom car and using an I6 in a rear mounted engine? Not that this isnt an awesome idea but wouldnt you want a slightly less long engine to use? Unless your mounting it sideways or something. IDK Post up some diagrams and maybe a CAD drawing of what your really trying to do, hell PAINT would work.

Hi,Well what i'm trying to do is build a custom like like stevespeed says. It is more like a kitcar project. I'm still trying to work out what kind of setup to do since i don't want to do a LS1 motor. There is the option of mounting sideway to do just a rear wheel drive, I was just wondering if it was possible to do a AWD and whole much i'm looking to spend. I know that it not going to be cheap. It is going to be 40k-60k for the complete build. But than again it is going to be one of a kind.

thanks for all the input guys please keep it coming, this is helping alot.

ok so why not save your self 5k and just use the factory gtr oil pan and fwd part of the drive system n mount the engine directly over the rear end? instead of buying another tranny n drive system, correct me if im incorrect but i think the fwd portion is beefy? hu awd guys?

I did research a long time ago about mid mount engine custom transmissions. There was a site that sold a tranny kind of like the one a Porsche uses. It was made so you can fit a bell housing that they fabbed up on it. It was meant to handle some realllllyyy serious HP. Upwards of 700. But I remember that when I saw the price I closed the page. Way expensive. Just to point you in the right direction, I think the tranny was in league with the TREMEC RWD trans.

A warning, I don't think 40-60k is going to cut it for a project like that. Better get that 2nd mortgage on your house.

Hi, Well this is my first custom build. I don't have to much knowledge of building cars like this. I've only tune and modified manufactured cars. The info you gave me was a big help. that would save me a good sum of money where i can put it else where. Thanks

The porsche/vw gearbox is going to be your best bet for a transaxle. You could also use the transaxle out of the C6 vettes and make an adapter plate.

Why not use something lighter for a tube frame car? The guys on the Lotus seven forums are making 350rwhp and doing 0-60 in 2.8 seconds using either the sr20. Their cars weigh in at around 1300lbs only and i can tell you they are a hell of a lot of fun to drive and go around corners very well considering they have no down force to speak of.

I hate to post a link to an outside forum, but i believe this might be helpful to you, the guys on this forum know a TON about suspension design, considering most of them are engineers. The link below is a mid engine ls1 powered tube frame chassis.

Yep... specifically an inverted Porsche G50 would probably be your best choice... looked into this a bit myself. Take lots of pics!!!

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but I was wondering if you could mount the motor in the rear with the AWD tranny and just use the front diff to drive the car? You would have to get custom axles that convert to the VW. Would the tranny last just using the FWD? Also, how hard would it be to reroute the shift linkage?

I am very curious if this is possible. I have an old Meyers manx that I would love to drop an RB motor into. It would be something completely different.
