I've seen where its been installed for less than $5k by a shop that also did some fabwork (not including motor costs). I plan to do most of the work my self up until the tuning, or just pay people i know to come over and do work i can't do (cheaper than a shop doing it and i know people). I found the motor on the net for anywhere form $3000-$4000 shipped. I think i could do this for less than $8000 which is what it would cost me just to turbo my current state 350z after UTEC, tuning, shop fee, and taxes. And that doesn't include the manifold upgrade, and HFC i would want to do when i turbo it. Just to turbo my Z could cost easily as much as just swapping in a motor with stronger stock internals.

So, my questions are, what needs done. I know about the motor mounts, the driveshaft, and the oil pump problem on the pre-92' rb26's.

How would i find out what year the motor is, or should i just replace the pump anyway? Should i use the rb25 trans or keep the one that comes with the motor? I'm basically just starting my research on this and really don't plan to do it until next year but was originally thinking of a 2jz swap (bad idea, don't hate cuz i already know).... Any input on this would be great, help, pricing, etc.... Also if you are going to say "why" or "beef up the VQ" or even suggest another motor swap, then just save your breath, i know my options and i want to know more info on this before i make any final decisions. Plus i don't have the money for it now anyway.

Thanks in advance.-Ryan

*edit* For the record i searched for like 6 hours....

ok, yer def gunna need rb25 trans, unless your doing awd conversion ( epic fail) as far as oil pump, if yer ona budget and motor isnt beat use oem one and dont be a rev a holic, as far as pricing talk to a nico sponsor about getting a rb26 CLIP

There are adapter kits that guys sell for the Z33 trans to mate with the Z32 block, I dont see why they wouldnt be able to help with something similar for the RB26

In any event, you may have better luck following my bell housing swap method, and just using a Z32 trans mated to the RB26 bell housing.......Z32 trans are MUCH easier to come by, and you can buy about 5 of them for the price of an RB25 trans.....

the question is how far you want to take the rb? the short crank is not a problem if you want to stay below 400 hp, and not rev the engine to redline. Many stock r32 gtrs go a long way.

karim has a r33 rb26 motor with turbos, no intake manifold for under $2k. Talk to him if he still has it.... [email protected] ... let him know Joe refered you.

BTW have you looked into the VQ35HRs... they seem more promising than the pre-vqs.

i appreciate the help guys, i have searched a lot and done a lot of research for one days worth (yesterday) and i actually found a ton of info on the rb26, but hardly anything on the 350z swap. One of the main reasons i consider this swap is because of the potential power the rb26 can make. I know the vg30 is good for about the same too, but i am thinking of having something a little less common.

Anymore info would be appreciated....

whats your method? will it pretty much bolt right up? is the VG/z32 trans going to let me leave the drive shaft the way it is? i figure no matter what i will have to cut a drive shaft.

I saw one a while back that used a G35 AWD front subframe and ran the AWD trans from the RB26 with the Rb26 and it was a time attack monster. I've also seen swaps where people get a custom adapter plate made to mate the 6 speed VQ trans with the RB26 block. It shouldn't be hard for a competent machine shop if you can make a good enough drawing.

i work in a forging and machining factory, the die shop machinists are amazing (well 2 of the guys) they could make anything i want. Good idea. Where is everyone finding this info on the rb26 swap into the z33? Ive been searching for hours and barely find anything.... Everything i find doesn't give any details on the build or how they made what they did work. Your info is valued because i can't find anything hardly.

One question; is there a way for me to tell or look up the motor code to find out if it was in a r33+ for assurance about the oil pump problem?

you can tell if you have a r33 rb26dett ... there should be a connector comming out of your frist and second intake runner !!!

r33 and r34 rb26dett have that connector ...
