Hello all,

I need some help with ARP Head Studs (instructions). I cleaned the head gasket off, chased the threads, sprayed brake cleaner and blew any crap out of the holes with compressed air. Then oiled the head stud and screwed it hand tight into block.

Now for some questions:

1. What is better for the threads that go into the block; leaving them dry or put some 3-1 oil on the threads which i did?

2. Which studs are connected to water jackets so i can put thread sealer on them? or just put thread sealer on all of them?

3. Which thread sealer is better Permatex #2, Permatex UltraBlack or ARP thread sealer? Or any suggestions?

4. Should i follow ARP's torque values and sequence of 105 ft-lb per stud or use the FSM values and sequences of 76-83 ft-lb?

Thank you very much for any help!!!!

You should be using ARP thread lube ONLY and torquing to ARP's specs. There are no water jackets that are sealed by the head studs.

ARP assembly lube goes on the threads that go into the block

Do NOT use any sealant - the purpose of the headgasket is to seal

Always follow ARP torque specs with ARP lube. OEM specs are designed for OEM fasteners (which have a correlating strength)

Pretty much what everyone else said...

1. Those need ARP lube. Both the block and head end.
2. None, and don't use thread sealer.
3. See above
4. Follow ARP's because you're using their fasteners. If you really can't find the ARP moly lube, ARP has a torque spec for regular oil IIRC. I'd try to find the ARP moly lube though. Should've come in a packet with your head studs. That or any local machine shop should have it.
