Here's a quick vid of the FD doing a 38PSI dyno pull. It blew a freeze plug out of the block at the end of the run...hence the smoke. That put an end to the dyno runs for the day so I was kind of upset that no more power was to be made.

HOLY $HIT!!! Once that thing spooled all hell broke loose! Were you tuning it or was that a WOT run? It seemed to take ages to spool. I can't wait to see a video of that thing on the street/strip.

BTW how does one blow a freeze plug out of the block? Was there some kind of head gasket issue or was it just a freak occurance?

Yes...for now.

It's already tuned. We were just doing WOT pulls. Not sure how the freeze plug came out but it did. At first we thought we stretched the head studs since we are using standard ARP2000's, not L19's. After further inspection (and the freeze plug laying on the dyno) we determined that was not the case...yet.

True but dont they pop out to prevent your motor from being heavily damaged? If I remember when I took shop back in the days in high school my instructor told us that these are cheaper to fix then for a motor to just blow.

they are there incase you were stupid and used water instead of a 50/50 mix...hence the name freeze plugs.

I'm not sure why it fell out either. The coolant jackets probably only have about 24-25PSI max in them so it was weird.

I have a close friend with a nissan L28 turbo that likes to blow out freeze plugs on occasion. He still doesn't know why, so please post up if you figure it out!

Hopefully it does not happen again.

Could the block be flexing enough to pop them out? I'm fishing here.

Really not sure why it came out but I'm half thinking about tack welding the next one in.

hmmm I would think the only way the plug would fall out would have to be extra pressure in the coolant passages = lifted HG or maybe extreme blow by plus other problems?? one thing is for sure they just dont fall out unless they are old and rusted apart.

nice vid though. keep us updated on the car and the freeze plug

extreme blowby wouldn't reach the coolant..

my guess is the HG lifted causing the coolant to be pressurized... don't think the block can warp up by where the freeze plugs are either. hopefully its just some random occurrence? hope its nothing too serious.

i'm curious to know what caused this... have you leaked the motor down or compression tested since it happened?

yea I agree thats why I said plus other problems. Could be intake mani gasket, might have pushed a little extra psi into the coolant chambers, I've always hated the design of the intake mani for that reason

when the freeze plug blew out of my plymoth laser it was due to a headgasket going bad. I agree 100% bad HG

+1 for excessive pressure in the coolant system......

well there had to be somthing that went bad to allow 38psi to get in the coolant passages, so a simple test you can do is do a block test with the dye and it will be able to tell you if it is a blown head gasket or not. also what intake mani gaskets did you use? oem or tomei etc. cause i use tomei intake and exhaust gaskets on my rb26. keep us updated

bad *** video! car sounds wicked once the turbo spooled! what are you revving to. and freeze plugs are wrongly named, they are not meant to "pop" out when the coolant freezes they are merely casting plugs from when the block was cast.

did you have the car tunned by SP, & are you using one of their turbos?

Yes, the car was tuned by SP. No, I'm using a standard Garrett GT4202.
