Ok. The time has come to choose a clutch. I am installing an RB26DETT motor into a S14 chassis with the RB25 RWD transmission. Now, I know that I have to choose a 90-96 300zx Non-turbo clutch to use on this swap.

I am located in the states, so I want to stick with a US based company for the clutch choice.

I have narrowed it down to the basic companies, SPEC, Centerforce, and Clutchmasters.

Now, which one should I choose. I am leaning towards the SPEC clutches because I just owned one in my turbo 96 Maxima pushing 400 whp with the SPEC Stage 2 clutch. I really liked it and I am leaning towards it. However, with the simple RB26DETT bolt-ons available, I am afraid that I will rush past the 455 ft-lbs of torque it holds. So, I was leaning towards the Stage 3 which is a sprung 6-puck disk that holds 515 torque, and is still for both street and strip. However, I have never been a fan of the puck design clutches because of the On/Off feeling they give and how annoying that can be, especially for my daily driver (other than my crotch-rocket). Also, the life expectancy of a puck design clutch is usually, and I say generally, shorter than that of a standard design disk.

Any ideas here peeps? Thanks all........

Don't forget about ACT. I have one and love it. They are reasonable in price and really durable. That's a really common clutch around here and pretty much everyone loves them.

Personally I would stay away from the SPEC clutches... I just pulled one off a customer car today at my shop, and that thing was shredded... The damn pressure plate had grinded the crap out of the clutch and even damaged the flywheel. Not to mention previous instances of the spec clutches failing or not holding above 300hp... Yes I am sure many other people out have had no problems with there SPEC clutch, but imo other clutches like ACT have held up far better.

Ok, but what series/stage ACT clutch should I look into. I do love the Clutchmasters clutch, by looks, however $450 for a clutch is kinda steep to me.

Regarding the SPEC clutches, what stage was it that had torn up and schredded? Thanks so much for the responses.

What ever you do, if you want a clutch that won't slip, don't buy one of those "Centerforce Duel Slippin Clutches" Those things are a joke. They claim 90% over stock, but fail to metion its the flywheel rating and gross net at that....

I used a ClutchMasters stage 3 on my turbo L28 z car, and while on the dyno, it gernaded on me and blew a hole thru the bellhousing. All I did was let off the gas after reaching redline on the dyno, and kaboom... the finger straps that hold the pp together snapped off.

Then I went with the Spec stage 4 sprung 6 puck, and had no issues with it at all. The only down side I can complain about is, it is very hard on your pp and flywheel. It ate a nice gouge in my new Findanza alum flywheel, so that pissed me off.... but bottom line is, if you want something that will HOLD fairly serious power/torque, your going to have to get a clutch that isn't very leg/flywheel friendly....

I will be using the HKS twin plate clutch/flywheel set on my upcoming project. We'll see how that performs...

A single will hold for a MILD warmed up motor, but WE recommond a twin disk for all our RB26 customers

Will the 90-96 300zx Non-turbo clutch work with the rb26 AWD transmission?

I wouldn't chose any of those. Neither would I chose a twin disk.

I'd go with the ACT. I've used them in a few Hondas and I really don't like any other clutch. I've felt clutchmasters slip before so I really am not a fan of theirs.

If you're not making huge power you don't necessarily need a twin disk clutch. They can have a rather harsh engagement as well.. and that's not too practical for street.

I have an ACT 2100HD on my RB25, but I am looking for around 450-500hp out of it next year and will be keeping the 2100 Pressure plate and will just be installing a unsprung 6 puck disk on it.

Exedy twin plate is the only one I'd recommend...

Exedy makes ACT clutches, so you are better off with either of them.

Doesn't Daikin make Exedy clutches? I had an exedy organic in my honda and it was perfect. The car was actually driveable(pedal feel/ engagement) I'm looking for a clutch that won't make driving the car a pain in the ***, so i'll probably be heading back to exedy or maybe act.
