...and we're pretty screwed if we've got a '96+ and OBDII?

There should be some why to get around the emissions thing. Look into a fuel controller that will allow you to have multiple settings (or a 2 stage chip) and make one so that when at idle you are as stoich as possible.

As far as the motors being legal... they are here legally in HCR32-34's from motorex. I don't see how this is any different than some guy putting a Viper motor in his Wrangler or someone putting a DOHC Cobra motor in a street rod. As long as the motor is the same year or newer than the car(240's with OBDII might need to do the same thing as the newer Skylines and be converted... maybe contact motorex on this) i don't see how it wouldn't be legal without being a double standard. Are RB's OBDI (honestly don't know)... if so then everything should be straight on OBDI cars.

Just my opinion...

Well, I think that most people who work at those places, even if they know the sound of a 6-cyl opposed to a 4 banger, probably would not know that a 6 is not offered in a 240, would take it for granted, and not even check on it. I'm not too worried about those guys being all that knowledgable about cars anyway.

My main concern is what is the computer going to tell them when they hook it up to the car? Surely the new ECU will not look the same as the 240SX engine? Night told me that if they didn't look under the hood, I'd be fine, too, but he didn't know what it'd look like on the 'puter since he didn't have smog testing in his area.

Hopefully it'll be a moot point anyway, as I will probably be living in Corvallis by the time the car needs to be smogged again, and I don't think they have emissions testing in that county.

They look about the same physically... unless it says "RB__DET" on it, and they probably don't know what that means... I wouldn't worry about it. Then again, I don't have emissions testing in my county.

oh yeah, I'm not worried about them seeing the engine physically, I'm concerned about what data will show on their computer when they hook my car up to it. Well, concerned is a bit strong a word. Curious is more like it. Like I said, I will likely be in a non-smogged county by the time I need it anyway. :D

Its different because those engines were sold in the US, and RB's wern't. Thats my take on it anyway. But lucky for me since i live in canada i don't need to worry, one inspection when i buy the car and thats it....forever...

The RB series should be easy to get passed emmisions. I grew up in MA so I know how much there emmisions laws suck. You don't have to worry about big cams or huge injectors so a simple adjustment of the AF ratio should be more then enough. Try adjusting it then having a service station do a test run. It might cost you 20 bucks, but atleast you'll know.

But the motor is legal when buying Skylines through Motorex... which I hear don't modify the motors at all... that's my argument.
