I know it has an oil cooler, that's why I asked...

I was just surprised that they said it needed replacement because there are no moving parts in it.
Basically, it is a very small heat exchanger. The coolant comes in and passes through a separate passage around the oil passage as the oil enters/exits the filter. The coolant picks up some of the heat. It would be tough to get rid of it completely because the housing has a weird gasketed connection to the block. You could disconnect the coolant lines and bypass the stock cooler, but it was there for a reason.
