People repeat what they hear from other people on the internet too much with zero experience. It'll do a lot more than 500, but tuning is key.

They're cast pistons so don't expect 2JZ #'s stock.

yeah i was told the pistons crack easily that the rods are the strong point only...so i should do a piston rod setup just to be on the safe side

Yes you should. We all should. Question is do you have them money and is it necessary? I know several cars making well north of 500rwhp on bone stock RB25's. I'm going to replace my pistons with forged slugs when they break, but I haven't managed to pop them yet, knock on wood.

It is no myth... I have seen a number of cracked pistons. Some due to minor knock, and others without a single nick on the pistons. Just a clean crack. It also usually the 1st ringland, but I have seen case where the piston will crack clean in half.

But to be honest, I still wouldn't build a motor until I blow it.

It's no myth the pistons are the weak link. If the motor goes, that's usually what goes first. I'm saying they don't magically blow up at 500hp like you would be lead to believe on certain forums (not this one).

Keep in mind you can break it in ways that take other stuff out like turbo's, cranks, and blocks. The later two are pretty unlikely though. I have somewhat of a skewed perspective since I'm in Japan and can get decent RB25's for like $300. I would say run it till it blows though. It'll probably surprise you what it'll do and how long it'll go for.

Agreed though, it's not a 2Jz.

are you guys talking about s1 or s2 rb25. i'm putting a s2 rb25det in my coupe and my hp goal is 350hp to 400hp. is this possible with stock internals w/ just a bigger turbo and higher cc injectors? thnx

What do you mean, what turbo? Link to my "look at me" thread in my sig for mod list. Power wise? Low to mid 600's at the motor.
