Does lifter tick get faster when you rev the motor? I have a ticking noise that sounds like its coming from the front of my motor. The car sits a lot and I hear that due to infrequent oil changes, I could get a lifter tick. The more RPMs there is the faster the tick and its a pretty loud tick. Is there any good guides available on cleaning/bleeding the lifters? I would appreciate any help. I want to drive my car this year but the ticking is unnerving.

Welcome to Nico!

All of the valvetrain will act in according to the rpm, noises included. I never bled any of mine, RB20. I did leave them soaking in oil overnight before installation though. Pop off the valve cover, is there any sludge buildup?

I'm popping off the valve covers this weekend and digging in to her to see if I can find out whats going on. I know valve train noise is typical. But this ticking is valvetrain noise I haven't heard before. Its pretty loud. I really am hoping its just the lifters and I can clean/bleed them. I'm hoping there is no sludge. I rebuilt the motor less than 5k ago. Granted it spends most of its life under a tarp in my garage.

If it's only 5k old there should be zero sludge regardless of sitting. Sitting won't cause much of an issue unless you get water in the oil somehow.

The sludge comes from not changing your oil for a long time and the afterbirth of combustion ruins it.

Have you tried running the engine at 3000 rpm for about 3 minutes? Check the oil first, make sure it's good clean oil and at the correct level. Then start the car and let the engine get up to operating temp. Once it's at operating temp rev the rpms to 3000 and hold it for 3 minutes. Let the idle drop down on it's own and level off. Now get out and see if the noise has reduced. Repeat a couple of times and check the results. If no changes are noted you might have more than bleeding to do.

Ill try it but I won't even have to get out of the car to listen for the tick. It can be heard plain as day in the car.

So I did some work on the car today. The car starts up fine but the sound coming from the head is super unnverving. I'm wondering if I have a bent valve or something. I pulled the covers and I saw no sludge or anything. The oil is super clean (I changed it last summer and put 20 miles max on the car. it hardly gets driven). I know its tough to gauge what could be wrong with the vehicle based on sound but here is a video of the noise. Remember this noise is speed dependent.

What would my next course of action be? Would a compression test tell me if I have a bent valve or anything? She starts and idles fine and drives fine although the only driving I do is from the end of my driveway back into my garage.

Edit: Here is another video with a little bit of revving. https://youtu.be/HWnxb16Bfr4

Ouch. That's sounds like rod knock to me.

Here's an example.

Here's how you can test for it.
