So here is my situation and finding(possibly). I pulled the vtc mechanism off the intake cam gear to get some powdercoating done. when I came to install it I realized the cam gear is slotted where the VTC unit is bolted onto the gear. From the front of the motor you see the thread end of the bolts that are holding the VTC to the gear so its not noticeable unless you have pulled the intake cam gear. So it leads me to this

#1 I kinda screwed myself since I don't know what position I should tighten the VTC unit onto the camgear. Since the solenoid drives the cam and the gear is driven from the belt it ends up screwing with my cam timing since its acting like a adjustable cam gear and I have no reference points to go from...

#2 so I guess the OEM RB intake cam is adjustable from the factory? its just doest't have timing marks but if I marked it before I took it off I would be able to adjust a few degrees off the stock position. Only problem is the gear needs to come off for adjustment and it would require a dyno run to see if you are hurting or helping lol

anyways... any chance someone has a picture of the backside of a intake cam gear so I could see the orientation of the VTC unit in respect to the gear

You took the intake cam gear apart and can't put it back together because you don't remember the original position? Is that the gist of what you are trying to say?

In that case, I'm going to take a wild guess and say when the cam is at TDC for the #1 cylinder, the cam gear dot should line up with the slot on the rear timing cover. See if that fits and get back to us.

I took the VTC unit off the intake cam gear and I lost the original position it was adjusted too. Come to find out the stock intake cam gear is adjustable, like a douchebag I didn't mark the original spot so now If I guess and install the cam timing is going to be advanced or retarded. It has nothing to do with lining up the dot on the cam gear, this part I got down. I think im just gonna set it to the advanced side and hope for good results. I was reading up on some guy that gained 20 across the board from advancing some cam timing so hopefully i get lucky lol.

nice man, what bothering me now is that I managed to get a hold of two other gears and they were in different positions which is odd but I guess nissan wanted to mess with us. What I ended up doing it running longer bolts through the gear and adding locked nuts to the end. This will allow me to loosen/tighten the bolts form the outside and have an adjustable cam gear :D gonna hit a dyno soon as its up and see if I can get anything out of it
