OK so ive been speculating a trip out east to toronto , its about 950 miles from where i live atm. My question is since 80-85% of the time ill be cruising on part throttle, would it be fine to run 89 octane at say 5psi low boost? does it make sence to run low octane for such a long distance?and for those who have a programmable ems , is it possible to tune for low octane?Im looking to maximise my mileage without damaging my motor.I have 0 experiance with tuning ATM, running a stock ecu, but saving for a programmable ems & wideband O2.

-Thoughts, speculations and experinces, please reply!

no.

and honestly, do the math. your saving 10 cents a gallon. you might save a grand total of 10-15$ the entire trip.

is possibly blowing your engine worth $10?

ya i go to canada every week.

you did the math?

950 miles, each way. thats 1900 miles round trip. lets say 22mpg for highway cruising. thats 86.3 gallons of gas. (my rb used to get about 25mpg on the highway)

for a rough price, lets just say 3.00 for premium, 2.90 for 89 (generally 10 cents less a gallon)

premium - 258$89 - 250$

8 ****ing dollars.

lets even go to the extreme and say you only get 15mpg.

premium - 380regular - 367

you see why there is NO reason to run cheaper gas? unless my math is way off, but i really dont think it is.

are you serious? Kamin is just trying to help you out, not be a d!ck. Trust me I'm in a position where my motor is hurt, and the 10 dollars extra for the 91 + is well worth to price of a blown motor.... Don't be silly protect your investment.

it is possible if you pull the timing back. money aside, (basically it is not economically practical to do so is what Kamin is saying) if you knew what you were doing, monitored knock, and could pull out timing, then yes. you also REALLY want to stay out of boost. 80-85% of the time isnt really going to cut it. for that 15-20% of the time you're "on it", there could be detonation issues if you haven't pulled enough timing. also keep in mind EGTs are hotter when the timing is retarded.

the fact that you say 80-85% of the time concerns me, not having a programmable EMS with timing adjustment, and not havnig the experience, i would say don't do it.

Well i guess our nico 2 cents of information just isn't enough...He was looking more of a dollar. To bad cuz i mean like Kamin said you'd really be hurtying your car by going with cheaper gas...Makes no since because more than likely yeah you may stay out of boost but we do make errors and do forget things or our mental notes.....So whats Ten cents to be saving...Its not worth it at all...So if you don't like our Two cents take it and combine it to help buy a plane ticket....lol.
