The RB25DET series I clip that i'm purchsing for my S14 is missing a MAF. Of course sourcing a 300zx MAF would be easier and maybe cheaper, but i have heard that the engine will idle high and need tuning to run right.

IIRC the 300zx MAF is 80mm and the RB MAF is 70MM.

Will i need to get a Power FC w/commander to tune the engine or even a SAFC II?

Will the 300zx MAF even plug right in?

Or will any other MAF work ie. J30, Q45?

Thanks in advance.

z32 (300zx) MAF is the exact same size as R33 MAF. The voltage capacity is different.

In order to use the z32 MAF you will need an S-AFC or PFC either will be fine. You will however have to use the z32 plug and splice it in. As it does not just plug right in.

I fitted a Z32 MAF to my RB25DET today.

If you reset the ECU it will idle with the Z32 MAF but you will need to tune it. I'm using a GReddy E-manage which has a MAF swap feature.

I hope the E-Manage did the trick. I couldn't justify spending $1,400 USD for the Power FC just yet.

Keep me updated as to how that setup works for you. Thanks.

Edit: What version MAF did you use BTW? N/A, TT? Did it require any custom work to make the plug fit?

Aren't the Z and the 25 MAF are the same size?

Yeah, I know. I'm not one to be like, "jezz buddy what were you thinking?" I hate it when people do that to me... it was a rhetorical question meant to find the reasoning for swapping out two mafs that are so similar.

Will the old school S-AFC work as a translator for the 20 and a 25 maf (5 knob version)?

The greater voltage range on the z32 maf will be able to recognize greater airflow and therefore be tunable for the increased flow accompanied by larger turbos and higher hp levels.

As Nick said, the Z32 MAF provides better resolution than the RB25 MAF can. The Z32 can provide airflow measurement up to around 450 to 500bhp, the RB25 to only around 350 to 400. With the E-manage you have the option to add a MAP sensor which will allow you to control fuelling beyond the MAFS limit. I had a Z32 MAF from my previous engine so I decided to use it on the RB.

I'm actually using the E-manage to control the Z32 MAF in a 'blow-through' arrangement where the MAF is actually sited between the intercooler and the throttlebody. I trialled it on my CA18DET for 5 months and it worked well, hopefully it should work just as well on the RB too. Tomorrow I'll start mapping it and running the engine in prior to the cars first event on Sunday 21st. :)

I'll post up some pictures of the engine after the event and you'll see why we went 'blow-through'. Can't reveal too much at the moment ;)

I think the emanage can make up for a stock maf by incorporating a MAP sensor..don't quote me on that though.

The voltage range is the same on 99% of AFMs.. 0-5.14v

Its that fact that 300cfm through a RB25 is say 4.5v and 300cfm through a Z32 is say 3.2v (voltage and cfm as only an example)

Post cooler blow through setups are the biz.. AFM sees exactly the air the engine does.

Lower resolution. Larger range.
