So i searched for darius thread when he was having his powersteering problem. I couldnt get google to find it either. Im having the same problem he had. Pump i know is good im getting what i think is good pressure. Its not even moving fluid anymore. I cant remember what ended up being wrong with his car. steering rack? i'd love to have all the bugs worked out before i got to tune this thing so i know (atleast hope) that nothing will go wrong.

Maybe i should restate this. My PS pump works, i believe i have gotten all the air out of the system. When the lines a connected to the rack the fluid dont move like it should. Im really thinking the rack needs replaced or rebuilt, would i have to go to nissan for parts or could i go through like rockauto or somewhere? How hard is this to do on the s14s?

i rebuilt a hicas rack and threw it in my car as my s14 rack (180kmi) was leaking horribly.
rebuild kits are cheap for the s14 rack at about 30$ and its really only an hour or two of your time.

Are there any big differences between an s13 rack and s14 rack. I have a newish 13 rack here on my old chassis. Im thinking somewhere i read that the s13 had more throw in it. Meaning tighter turns?

a non hicas s13 rack is the same ratio as the s14, which is like 3.1 turns lock to lock...hicas reduces that to 2.6
past that the only difference is the od of the rack bore...its larger on the s13 so you have to use the round s13 bushing, the teardrop shaped bushing is the same between the racks.

s14 tie rods work just fine on the s13 rack.

Carl, is the rebuild really that simple? My rack is leaking like crazy and I had planned on a rebuilt one, however I can't really afford it for now so a seal kit is appealing. FWIW, kits are closer to $50 now. Mine is leaking at the pinion.

Well that was a good bit of info to know! Thanks carl!

240z- ive never rebuilt a 240sx rack, but id imagine the process is just about the same as most out there. I didnt find it very hard at all with the right parts, and assuming you have the tools needed. If youve never done one at all it might be a little intimidating.

I was curious about removing the rack, but it seems the easiest way is to drop the xmember out and take it off. It went very smooth, thanks for that im gonna get the car aligned, but other then that it seems to be working fine.

yeah, its not hard to do just very messy...best thing to do is to power wash off the gunk and crud first before disassembly and clean all internal parts meticulously well before rebuilding it.
follow the fsm and you'll see its not that bad.

make sure you drill out the staking first...else you'll be most unhappy with life.

Laziness has me tempted to just do the pinion, which is what's leaking. lol. Thanks for the warning!
