pulled the upper plenum on my new s2 rb25 today and the last 2 intake intake runners have oil coating the insides while the first 4 are relatively dry. does this mean that me and the mad scientist have to rip apart the engine block and replace the piston rings?

No not necessarily. Could be from the IACV. Do a leakdown test to confirm that each cylinder is good before installing it.

+1 on the leak down.

But from the sounds of your post it seems as if you received your engine, it's sitting on a pallet/engine stand, and you've began to look over the engine; correct?

If so, the engine might of been leaning over and oil traveled back over or some how got intake the manifold during transport.

Do you have oil in the exhaust runners of the said cylinders? Blown rings would push through all passages.

it looks to evenly spread on those to runners and its distinctly those two so i doubt its just from how the engine was leaning. also i picked it up in person at jdm engine depot and it was sitting upright.

im going to do a leak down test tomorrow the motor is just sitting in my garage..

might just be normal pcv crap that happened to pool in the manifolds over time.leak down or compression will tell all.

Now that I think about it. My engine had that oily crap all over the inside of the intake runners and it was perfectly fine. Don't sweat it. Do a leak down to make sure everything is healthy and go along your merry engine-swapping way.
