Ive heard many people say different things about rb25's being illegal in the US yet ppl drive with them. Are they completely legal or not? I live in new jersey and ive heard a few people have them. Please inform me on what you know

All you have to do is get it to pass emission testing.

It will need a catalytic converter. Even classic cars that are emission exempt still have to have the cat because the chassis came from the factory with one. Ask me how I know.

As far as whats under the hood, thats debatable. The inspection station may or may not go poking around to see whats in there. Im sure all they care about is the fumes coming out the tailpipe, which is a matter of your tune. With a completely stock setup, you might pass after you install the cat. If you add a high flow fuel pump though for example, you may run rich and not pass. If you fail because youre running pig rich, thats dumb anyways because youre losing power and efficiency.

Research what others have done to pass and also the laws in your state as they vary slightly from state to state.

From a completely legal standpoint, I'd say no. They weren't really tested in the US so TECHNICALLY they're illegal.

That being said, getting an RB25 to pass emissions is definitely possible. Check the laws in your state. If all you need is to pass a "sniffer test" then I'd say you're good to go if its running right and you have a cat.

if you take out the air filter right before you go in then put it back in after you leave, youll pass almost guaranteed. that goes for any engine.

In NC 1996+ vehicles have to pass an obdII emissions test through a computer, and pass a safety inspection which consists of a cat and muffler, turn signals in all 4 corners, headlights, tail lights, horn, etc and cant have a check engine light lit up. all engine swaps have to be the same year or newer than the vehicle and pass obdII.

as far as pre 96 all you have to do is make sure all lights, horn, and restraints work, have sufficient tire tread and have a full exhaust, other than that its fair game to do as you please.
